HA Futon Phoebe x Gerald

He works 10 hours a day at a burning insult of a "job" under a Napoleonic punk he could break with one finger. The ladder to better pay and worthwhile benefits seems to grow another rung each day. Getting to work in his beat-up old heap through a jerky slog of traffic is giving him a permanent case of whiplash. The MP3 player is broken, so he just listens to the thoughts of his stress - the news about the economy dominates the radio too much for him these days.

She's bloated, tired, and started this whole thing off throwing up everything she'd ever eaten ever. Her ankles are swollen, which would be really irritating if she could see her feet, but then, to do that, she'd have to see past her unmanageable boobs and sun-sized belly. Her single friends are going to bars and dancing and all the other things she loved to do when she had a life.

They both had lives, even after the wedding. They had lives and plans and hopes and dreams, and then she got pregnant. What would keep them going? What could bring them through all the fear and trepidation of bringing a child into this ugly, stupid world?

"It's called a futon," she had told him.

And like anything else she had brought into the house to bring the flavor of her Asian heritage to her surroundings ("You're only half Japanese, Pheebs," he protested) it was met with more playful derision than resistance. Even that disappeared after his first night with her. It was warmth and peace and love and comfort, even if he woke up with her hair in his mouth from time to time.

It was what kept them going through the irritation of his job, her frustrations with her pregnancy and the board of regents. It was the sweet welcome of her softness nestling into his strength, his longing wrapped securely around her soothing warmth.

It was what made their fears melt away to the promise of a beautiful new future between the two of them.
