Midnight Monster

Strong arms wrapped around him and pulled him into a warm, safe embrace.  He rubbed his cheek against the soft linen of his father's sleep shirt as he snuggled into the comfort of his chest.

"Bad dream, little guy?" InuYasha asked, stroking his son's hair, rubbing the base of his son's right ear.  "I heard you yelling."

Atae sniffled a little and nodded, but calmed down as he rested in his father's arms.  "Big monster," he sniffled.  "He wanted to eat me'n Mama."

"Well the big monster's gone, little guy."  InuYasha shifted his son's weight in his lap.  "You're safe, and Daddy's not going to let any big monster eat you or mama."

"I hurted him," Atae said, looking up into his father's amber eyes.  "I hit him with my claws and he yelled."

"That's my guy," InuYasha said.  "You helped protect your mama."

"Yeah," Atae said sleepily.  "When I get bigger, I'm gonna help you keep Mama safe just like you do, Daddy."

"Glad to hear it.  Want to come sleep next to Mama?" InuYasha asked.

Atae nodded.

"Good," he replied, roughing his son's hair, and standing up.  "That way you can help me keep the monsters out of Mama's dreams."

"For real?"  Atae asked.

"Yeah.  No monsters'll dare get her with me and you to guard her."

InuYasha walked into the room where Kagome lay sleeping peacefully, and lay his son down next to her.  The boy looked up at his father, smiled sleepily, and snuggled into his mother's warmth.  InuYasha, watching the moonlight from the window play over them both, thought for a moment about nightmares and fulfilled dreams, lay down next to his wife, and threw a protective arm over them both.  After awhile, he too drifted off into sleep.
