Bad Dream

She blinked twice before realizing where she was, the sleep leaving her only reluctantly. The room glowed with light from the fire pit, warm and golden, instead of the dull red glow it had when she went to sleep.

"InuYasha?" she said, sitting up.

He was sitting next to the fire pit, stirring it with his fire tongs, his back to her, dressed only in his sleep kosode. The cloth looked dark in the shadows, framing his long silver hair.  His ears and the top of his head picked up ruddy highlights like a crown, the light moving as he moved to stir the fire in the pit.  Hearing her voice, his ear flicked in her direction, then he turned to face her.

She really couldn't make out his face, because it was backlit. "InuYasha?" she repeated.  "Are you all right?"

He nodded, and dropped the tongs, and moved back toward her.  "Bad dream," he said, softly.  "Just thought I'd sit up a little bit."

She held the covers up.  "Want to tell me about it?"

"I didn't mean to wake you up," he said, ignoring her question as he slid back next to her.  "I just needed some time to let the dream get out of my head."

"It's all right," Kagome said, leaning her head against his shoulder.  "I think I just realized you weren't next to me, and that woke me up."

He pulled her close and let his hand trail up to her cheek, cupping it gently.  He looked at her deeply, his eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her feel like he was trying to read her soul.  Unable to handle the intensity anymore, she reached up and kissed him lightly.

"Tell me you're happy here," he asked when she pulled away.  His voice was so needy that it shocked her.

"There's no other place I would rather be, InuYasha.  Yes, I am happy here."  She ran her fingers over his lips, then let them trail into his hair.  "But you know that."

"The dream . . . " he said, letting his voice trail off.  "It felt so real."  He sighed.  "We were standing by the Goshinboku in the dream.  You . . . you were crying how you hated living here, hated living with me, how you had made a horrible mistake coming here.  I reached for you, but you broke away from me and ran to the well, and jumped in.  The well didn't let you through, and you fell hard and hit your head, and when I lifted you up, there was blood on my hands.  And then I woke up."

"InuYasha," she said, taking his hand in hers. "It was just a bad dream. This is my home.  Here.  With you."  She moved his hand down to the slight swell of her abdomen.  "And with the child we have made.  I don't want to be anywhere else."

His lips found hers, pouring out his heart to her in that kiss.

"Let me show you how happy you make me," she said, returning his kiss with one equally as passionate.

His hands slid under the cloth of her kosode, brushing against the warmth of her thigh as their mouths and tongues chased away the night shadows.

After a moment, he broke off the kiss, looking at Kagome with a sheepish grin.  "You must think I'm pretty stupid to get that worked up over a dream," he said.

She kissed his chin and pulled him closer.  "No.  I think you're a man who loves his wife."

"That I do, Koibito," he murmured.  Pulling the knot of her sash belt loose, he  proceeded to show her just how much.
