:new: Added a sixth public breeding spot for anyone who hasn't gotten a baby yet- I feel bad telling people that can't have one :( But once it is taken I might do a contest to win a breeding from her as a 7th spot... hmmm
OH MY GOSH! Fanfare Farm finally has a Triple Crown winner after both Posiedon and Northwest Next lost on the last race!!
--------------------
Max tightened Summerlady's reins, she was a spirited and sometimes difficult filly, and he'd been added to Fanfare Farm's family specifically to be Summer's jockey. He didn't mind, the filly was gorgeous and had an amazing pedigree- if he was ever going to win notable races, it would be on her, and plus, he admired her fearless personality.
This was their last good work out before her first race, Max was a bit nervous but she was showing her usual bravado- trying to take off and race every other thoroughbred on Fanfare Farm's track. Max had to always be on his guard on her, especially when other horses took off- right now it was only them, Temp and Jake and Nate and Matt working.....

The crowd for the Springfield Fillies' Special Maiden was decent, but that was because people were waiting for the bigger races that would follow. Even though no one was there just to watch her, besides of course some of the Fanfare Farm family, but that didn't stop Summer from making a scene, pulling sideways from her handler and dancing along. If you saw just her, you'd think it was the Kentucky Derby, how she feigned nervousness.
She loaded into the gates decently, not really minding but aiming a light kick at the handler for good measure. Once inside she was all business- Max was happy to see her ears focus on him like they always did at training. The gates opened and she broke cleanly, flying to the front. The pace was steady, she didn't mind and allowed herself to settle next to the other horse that was expected to take off near the end.
It was time to let her loose! Max allowed the reins to slip through his fingers and gave her a quick tap with the whip- she shot off but so did the other mare, they battled it out and then Max felt her slow a bit, she still grabbed second by a nose but she just gave up- Max had no clue why she'd do that, she was so competive! What was wrong with her?
-------------
Max sighed, they'd won the Acorn Stakes- the first jewel of the Triple Tiara but now she'd gotten second by a head in the Mother Goose Stakes, because of a stumble right before the line. As Summer was led off the track, she flicked her ears irratably- clearly very upset that she hadn't been able to give it her all because of a trip. Max had found out why she'd given up in her first race long ago, she only raced hard if she deemed the horses worthy of her best. That tendency made it a little rough to make their way into the bigger races but they did eventually and now with her three year old season they were on fire.
"Are we going to race her in the Coaching Club?" Max asked once Shelby reached him. Shelby paused a moment.
"I'll talk to her trainer about it, but I think it'd be a cool idea to go for the Triple Crown with her. It was postponed because of flooding of the whole track, so she'd have a decent bit of time to recover- even though she wouldn't be starting the series out as fresh as the other contendors," she said, looking at him to see if he thought she was crazy.
"That might work- she woulda won this one if she hadn't tripped a bit, she really could win the Kentucky Derby...."
---------------
Max felt his heart hammering away as he left the jockeys' room to go mount Summerlady- this was the Kentucky Derby and she hadn't had half as much tor est before it as most trainers had allowed their contendors. She had been asleep last time he'd walked by, a good sign, she wasn't too nervous- of course, that could change as soon as she saw the huge crowds.
The handlers were walking the horses, now saddled by their various famous people, down a paved path. Once she reached him, he felt a bit better- event hough he could feel all the cameras focus on him. If Summer wasn't nervous, he shouldn't be. They had been getting lots of attention, the possibility of a filly who'd won the first jewel of the Triple Tiara, then lost by a head in the second because of a trip being able to compete in the Triple Crown was usually impossible- but flooding at Churchill Downs made it possible.
Summer began dancing as soon as her hooves touched the dirt of the track- she was excited, not nervous though, with her those were actually two different things. The warm up lap seemed to pass too fast and then all of the sudden they were being loaded into the gates- Summer of course, in usual style, made a fake fuss over it- doing a little half rear, which got a nervous competitor really rearing. She was, as always, calm as soon as she was in the gates- ears focused on Max.
"We got this far girl, let's go all the way," he whispered, stroking her white ear for good luck and then getting into position.
The gates flew open and Summer charged! The cheers of the spectators were deafening until Max was able to zone them out. Summer settled towards the front of the pack, they were not about to get boxed in. The waiting flew by, maybe because Max was so nervous for the actual flying part. But it came. Max whacked her with the whip once, feeling her stride lengthen beneath him as she darted for the front- her main competitor, a bay colt, stayed right by her. She lengthened her stride a bit more, testing him. He copied. Back and forth they battled until the line, she managed to stick her head in front, just like she'd been trained. They'd won! And by a head, just like how they lost the Triple Tiara!
-------------
The horses thundered along, Max was more nervous for this race than any other, ever. The Triple Crown hung in the balance. Summer snorted, she knew it was time to let loose. One touch of the whip and she took off- the others seemed to slow down. The colt that had been trying to steal each race from her, always keeping close to her, was far behind them. The line was approaching and she didn't even need to reach her head out. Yes! Max raised his arm and smiled widely, Summer slowed as reporters swamped them.
"How does it feel to have won the Triple Crown?"
"Look at Summerlady, she's summing it up pretty well'" Max laughed, Summer was literally dancing- not the nervous type but the you-can't-catch-me type.
"There you have it, Summerlady, from Fanfare Farm, ridden by Max Jacobs, has won the Triple Crown! You've just made history, Max."
"No, Summer's made history- I just came along for the ride," Max blushed.
