Trial, Part Two

Description

Melinda Crane raced up the stairs of the courthouse, pulling and tossing off her smart navy business attire to reveal her primary colored superhero garb and become Angel Falls own Mindy Marvel. The red haired beauty flew with both fists forward through the upstairs window that opened out facing the street, emerging through the cascading glass. The scene below her was absolute panic and carnage. The crowd of reporters and bystanders were fleeing in all directions as police surged forward against the mob. About two dozen or so soldiers of the Fourth Reich firing assault rifles were firing at the officers and anyone else in their path. Each tall, muscular blonde woman wore the same gray uniform complete with a swastika emblazoned on the front. The only difference was that they wore no gas-masks this time, but each was equipped with a tactical headset. Already several bodies lay dead or dying in pools of blood around the courthouse steps. A police van lay turned over nearby ablaze, looking like it had been hit with a missile or bomb of some sort. Mindy curled her lip and spun in the air, diving towards the earth. She had known that the Reich would pull a stunt like this down in her boots. So had Maia and Olga. When they approached her a few weeks earlier, telling her they had some important matter in Europe to take care of, she was more than happy to volunteer to sit in on the trial. These bitches were rabidly fanatical and savage. They wouldn't rest until their leader was free and this attack was a last, desperate gambit. Ilsa Hauppman may have been physically broken by Walkiria, but her sick, diseased mind was what they needed the most. Her evil will was what held these psychopaths together.

Mindy slammed into the ground fist-first near the largest concentration of Reich flunkies and unleashed a shockwave. The blast threw the group of women backwards with tremendous force, tossing them like dolls across the street to come down hard on the concrete or land on top of the parked cars. Standing up, the young heroine held her hands up in front of her to create a force-field as the first volley of 5.56mm caliber bullets predictably showered in her direction. She ran parallel to the next grouping of henchwomen keeping the shield between them. As the projectiles came in contact with it them dropped and bounced harmlessly to the ground, all of their kinetic energy spent. The mayoral candidate then began unleashing electrical blasts at them from her eyes. The blasts were non-lethal but charged with more than enough juice to knock them out cold as blue electricity arched all over their bodies. Despite the revulsion she felt towards these killers she was going to take them alive. The police were beginning to regroup and most of the civilians had fled the area. The reporters however were not as smart and stuck around from various hiding places with their cameramen. Another AFPD SWAT van careened around the corner and jumped the curb nearby only to have another missile strike it from a nearby rooftop. The rocket slammed into it's side, igniting the vehicle and throwing it through the air several dozen feet before smashing it into a row of parked cars. Mindy took flight towards the rooftop the assassin was striking from, her teeth clenched in a grimace of disgust.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Helena Koch had watched Mindy arrive and could have set her clock by it. Damned supers in this city were so fucking predictable, it was just a matter of which one would arrive first. That fact it was Marvel made her grin. It made things easier. As she reloaded her RPG she spoke into her headset, commanding her soldiers to initiate Directive 4-to distract the capes with collateral damage until their objectives were complete. The commander on the ground was almost too happy to comply. When Helena looked back down on the streets, Mindy had taken out about five or six of her best commandos already and the police had themselves another armored van rumbling onto the scene. The blonde woman ran her gloved hand across her forehead to wipe the sweat out of her eyes and took careful aim at the SWAT transport. With her left hand she motioned to the nearby Fisher to turn her attention on Mindy for the time being. Michelle nodded and swung her Drachenjaeger towards the blue and yellow clad heroine. All those bright colors made her such a delicious target Fisher mused as she took careful aim at the caped woman. What a fucking idiot. She blocked out the explosion from down below as Koch eliminated her target, watching only as pieces of flaming debris bounced and rolled past Mindy as she launched herself towards their rooftop. She squeezed the trigger slowly, relishing the roar of her pet and the flames that it spit as the deadly projectile honed in on it's mark.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first round from the Drachenjaeger slammed into her protective shield like a battering ram. The polarity wall held, but the force of the impact sent her spinning back to the ground like a crashing helicopter. Mindy landed hard on the pavement with her feet, tossing up tiny chucks in all directions. She held her arms up and pressed together in front of her face as the next round slammed into her shield. This time the shield held, but the expense of her ability to counter-attack at the moment. Whoever the sniper was she was an expert and the hardware she was using was military grade and powerful to say the least. Armor piercing, anti-tank rounds that were easily .50 caliber. Another one pushed her back several feet causing her to dig into the roadway with her heels to brace herself. A sniper rifle could only hold so many rounds. When this assassin paused to reload, Mindy would have her. A sound nearby brought her attention back to the soldiers on the ground. It was an electrical, whirling sound and unmistakable. Mindy's eyes grew large as she looked over to see one of the Nazi fanatics powering up a minigun. The large blonde woman carried the massive weapon in her arms with a large belt of ammunition leading from it to an immense, metal pack affixed to her back. The flame-haired hero let out a cry as the soldier leveled the weapon at the police and media still foolish or brave enough to remain on the scene. The other members of the Reich began to fire their assault rifles indiscriminately towards any moving targets available. Another sniper round crashed into her polarity wall, making her take another step back. Desperately her mind raced to think of something to do. If she exerted any of her other powers to stop the soldier that were preparing to fire that monstrous device into the crowds, the sniper would drop her for certain.

Getting to the top of a high rise construction site was no simple feat. Most people had to take specially-designed elevators, some required harnesses, and hardhats were certainly a must. Usually, only trained professionals would step out onto those big steel girders to do the work of riveting them together so immense skyscrapers could be built.

Then some people were like Cedric Grey. It had been a boring day for the tall, muscular blonde. As he dejectedly munched on a submarine sandwich, he looked at his watch. For days he’d been going out to scour the city’s streets for somebody, anybody who might be causing trouble.

In the end, he always wound up the same: Bored. It was like somebody was going out there and sweeping the streets before him, but he wasn’t even seeing the city’s local color. No spandex, no capes, no masks. That made him grumble a bit, because he’d already seen some of the talent, and he liked what he’d seen.

Today, he’d packed himself a lunch and was eating it early, and dejectedly, as the bearded man who was supposed to start his shift at riveting walked up to him. The burly dark-skinned man had always prided himself as being the largest on the crew, but when he saw Grey, he started getting worried that some sort of issue was about to take place.

“Relax,” Cedric waved for him to calm down, “I’m not here to cause trouble. I’m here to keep it from happening… Problem is… There’s nothing happening!”

“Isn’t that a good thing?” the construction worker’s deep voice lightened a couple octaves as his heart rate eased.

“Yeah, but it’s boring!” Cedric grabbed the axe lashed to his back by a steel chain and pulled it out to arm’s length, “I came here expecting to be able to go out and find an adventure… Then it was like the entire city just clammed up as soon as I hit the streets!”

“You think it’s about you, huh?”

“Hell no!” the burly blonde turned and favored the man with a toothy grin.

Damn, the worker thought, He’s the spitting image of what all those assholes at…

“Hey!” he realized as the thought struck him, “Maybe all the criminals are laying low for the moment, waiting to see what happens.”

“What do you mean?” Cedric asked as he took another bite of his sub.

“Well, they’re havin’ that trial for that Nazi chick, right?” the man explained, “I’ve had to take a different route to work every day this week because the courthouse is, like, scumbag central!”

The big man blinked at the worker.

“Uh…” the riveter was confused, unsure if the bigger man understood him, “You know… The courthouse… The Nazi chick who always had it in for that Russian one?”

“That’s a fucking great idea!”

The big man hopped up on the girder and hugged the riveter. It was awkward. The worker thought he’d been laying it on pretty thick that he thought the axe-wielding moron was supposed to be part of the crowd of Hauppman supporters.

“I bet that thing goes tits-up in no time! Thanks!”

Without anymore to say, Cedric Grey bounded off the side of the building. Most people would hurtle several hundred feet to their death, but this was the same way the big man had jumped up here. Instead of plummeting, the big man’s muscular legs propelled him a gravity-defying distance. He leaped to the rooftop of the nearest building, his sandwich plummeting to the earth in his stead.

Mindy knew better than to let civilians suffer for her own sake. Her concern was beyond any form of professional security. She just knew it was the right thing to do.

She crouched to give herself some force and vaulted herself at the soldiers aiming for the crowd. Time seemed to slow down, and for a moment she could see almost everything happening in that instant. She could see the fingers tensing on the triggers, she could hear the report of the unknown sniper’s powerful weapon and she could feel the impact…

…She collided with the soldiers, knocking them several dozen feet away, where they tumbled into crumpled heaps in the middle of the street. A shadow was looming over her as Mindy rolled over to reassess the situation.

She beheld a tall man in what looked to be military camouflage. She recognized the Marine Corps digital-print cargo pants, thin green undershirt and combat boots. The chains he had wrapped about his torso and the gold-bladed axe he held in his right hand were certainly not standard issue, though.

“Damn, that stings,” he grunted as he rubbed his right pectoral with his free hand, “I think that was a fifty cal…”

He nudged the flattened piece of metal at his feet with the toe of his boot.

“Looks to be about the right amount of material… Damn, I'm gonna be bruised tomorrow.”

“Excuse me?” the flame-haired heroine asked, “What are you doing?”

“Oh, hi!” he said as he turned around and reached down with a broad, friendly smile to help her up, “I’m Cedric. Would you like some help?”

He was blonde, blue eyed, muscular and tall. The spitting image of the ubermench concept these terrorists revered. He had also just stopped a bullet meant for her and was offering to help her.

“Sure,” she replied in confusion, “Why not?”

“Oh, I can think of lots of reasons,” Cedric replied, looking up to his hair to show he understood her concerns, “But, frankly, I don’t think right now is the time to be picky about allies.”

“No,” Mindy smirked to him, “It’s not.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The beast known as Genocide loomed over those unlucky enough to still be trapped inside with her. She could still feel herself growing larger, becoming more and more hulking and strong with each passing second. Her rage was powering her transformation's continued expansion. Rage at that miserable Slav Olga Yezhov for continuing to stay alive despite everything she had thrown at her. Rage at Grendel for betraying her. Rage at Walkiria for snapping her spine like a dry stick and torturing her. At the present moment though all of her rage was directed at the insignificant creatures before her that had thought they could lock away and cage her for the rest of her life. The bailiffs and few police officers still in the court peppered her with small arms fire, but they might as well have been firing blanks at her. Her massive left arm shot out and grabbed the nearest bailiff by the leg, pulling him off his feet and dangling him in the air like a toy. She took a single step forward and brought her enormous fist down on DA Warrens with all her force. The hammer-blow shattered his skull like an overripe melon, spraying blood and brains all over gallery and sent his lifeless body crashing through the devastated prosecution table. Whipping the bailiff over her head like a sling, she sent him sailing into the side wall where he impacted cutting off his screams short. He flopped to the floor in a broken heap as Ilsa jumped up onto the defense table and glared down at her team of lawyers with a cruel smile.

Genocide grabbed the two lawyers on either side of Ester Kleinberg by their heads and lifted them up screaming. Most of the police had stopped firing realizing the futility of it and where helping people to escape from the courtroom. Judge Spicer was trapped behind the bench and could only stare in horror. One officer continued firing however, yelling in fear the entire time. His bullets bouncing off her exposed skin accidentally slamming home into one of the struggling lawyers killing him instantly. Genocide squeezed her hand shut on the other one's head, pulping it into jelly between her fingers. She threw the headless attorney at the officer, knocking him over like a bowling pin as he realized he had just killed an innocent bystander in his panic. Dropping the other member of her team, she gripped Kleinberg around both arms and hefted her up directly in front of her drooling, brutish face. She smiled wider at the terrified lawyer as she took her by the legs with one hand and held tight to her arms with the other. Ester realized as she was lifted up into the air over her head what Genocide planned to to do and began to beg and scream as her body was pulled taut. Ilsa looked up, the same hideous smile on her meaty lips, and spoke to her in a thick, husky Germanic voice.

“Arbeit Macht Frei”

Ester Kleinberg let out one final piercing scream as she was ripped violently in half and thrown in two different directions, showering Genocide in her hot blood. Somewhere she hoped that the woman lived a few more agonizing moments with half a fucking body. It was time to leave here at any rate. She could still hear the delicious gunfire and violence out in the streets. Koch was certainly making a mess of things outside. Best to make her exit now before the capes descended on the courthouse like moths to the flame. The immense, blood-soaked and nude woman rushed her way forwards, her footfalls shaking the entire floor. The police officer who was still standing in shock was crushed underfoot as she bounded on top of him, using his mangled body as a springboard to launch herself through the rear wall. She leapt out of the front of the courthouse in an explosion of brick and glass, landing in the street with a tremendous thud that cracked the asphalt in a crater around her.

"Oh boy! Oh boy! Oh boy!" Cedric smiled to Mindy watching the gigantic woman come down. "Rock-Paper-Scissors to see who gets to beat her down okay with you?"

Esther's greed got her killed, sad but fitting.
