I applied each grey circle individually on a black background. Several days of work...
Freddie Mercury (born Farrokh Bulsara) was a British musician, best known as the lead vocalist and a songwriter of the rock band Queen. As a performer, he was known for his flamboyant stage persona and powerful vocals over a four-octave range.

So manual work? I was guessing some kind of computer algorithm was applied on the original images to create the circle patterns we see in your portraits, not that they would be made "manually" so to to speak. Given the regularity they exhibit I thought a simple algorithm could be programmed to analyze the original image finding their contours and value differences to then assign position, size and color for each circle.
