Description
This is two images in one -- one shot by me in 1983 and the other captured from Google Earth, yesterday. The corner has undergone some significant changes, concurring with the urban development philosophies of the last few decades.
There are many changes to the building in the foreground, including the eviction of all tenants, upstairs and down. The building has lost its detail, its former life and connection to the natural development of the business district, but it has traded this for an amusement center advertising martinis and bowling.
Gone are the impromptu sidewalk vendors and a considerable amount of sidewalk traffic. The building now has a "planned" appearance. Even the "406" entrance to the upstairs businesses has been removed, as there are no tenants now. This is classic Jane Jacobs stuff. See how many changes you can identify, over the nearly 3 decades.

Very good picture. I prefer the 1983 one.
On a off-topic sidenote, I spotted on Skyscraperpage forums, these pictures of Harlem from the 1980s and 2007 [link]
