Description

It is true. In German we have indeed about five different words for „pancake“. Each region has it's own word for it. Germany's north-east says „Eierkuchen“, Saxony „Plinse“, Austria „Palatschinken“, Switzerland „Omelett“ and the rest of Germany says „Pfannenkuchen“ or „Pfannkuchen“. „Pfannakuacha“ is Bavarian (south-east) dialect.

The problem is that Germany's north and east use the word „Pfannkuchen“ for something completely different. Namely a jelly filled donut. XD This thing is called „Krapfen“ in Bavaria and Austria, „Kräppel“ in Hesse and „Berliner“ in the rest of Germany and in Switzerland.

I (Bavarian) had a Saxonian room mate during studies for three years and we still didn't learn it even after all this time. When I asked her if she wanted a „Pfannkuchen“ for lunch, she just stared at me bewildered, since she thought I offered her a jelly filled donut (which is more suited to dessert than lunch). And I didn't understand her at all when she wanted me to give her the „Plinsenwender“ (pancake turner).

Bavaria's text in the beginning „... bloß wega dem seine damischn Kiachal samma fei auf d'Nocht no Holler brocka ganga... oba na wan's no arg grea...“ is in standard German „... nur wegen seiner dummen Küchlein sind wir am Abend noch Holunder pflücken gegangen... aber dann waren sie noch sehr grün (hier: unreif)...“
„... just because of his stupid (little) cakes we went to pick elderberries in the evening... but they were still very green (here: unripe)...“

Austria has of course the newest iPhone (or whatever), while Switzerland doen't want to waste money for a new phone as long as the old one is still working somehow. XD

The part with Saxony's "Nu" is a RL-quote by the way. It was hilarious! :XD:

If you want, you can read the whole piece in German. With everybody saying everything in their respective dialects: [link]

Now with a sequel featuring Hesse!

Saxony and Bavaria are not my OCs (at least not their appearance XD). They are both shown in the "Summary of the war of Austrian succession".

I’ve heard about this stuff. I was thinking of the kind of joke about pancakes in an AU fic I might want to do sometime in a scene where the German states have to get used to dealing with eachother after Unification (“I said I wanted a pfannkuchen moron!” “What?! I gave you a pfannkuchen!” “What am I, stupid?! I know what one when I see one, this ain’t one!” “What are you on about?!” “What are YOU on about?!”) after I found out about this, as well as how different dialects are in general (“WHAT THE HELL IS HE SAYING?!”). I didn’t think there would be a difference with something as basic as “yes” and “no” though. XD I find that kind of hilarious.
