Tom woke up to the sound of a crackling fire.  He glanced over to see Kelly fully dressed, making a pot of hot water over the flames for tea.
            "You're up early," he commented.
Kelly jumped.  Her mind had been elsewhere.
"Morning," she said softly.  "I didn't sleep much at all last night and now I've got a bad headache."
"I'm sorry," Tom said as he rolled up his sleeping bag.  Kelly did look tired.  The two were making their way toward Cerulean City, where they were supposed to meet up with Robert before heading to the Battle Factory.  Tom had hoped to get as far as Mt. Moon today, but it looked like Kelly may not be up for it.
"Do you want to rest a little bit before we head out?" he offered.
Kelly shook her head.  "No thanks, I kinda want to get back to civilization as soon as possible.  I want to sleep in a real bed tonight."
"Alright then," Tom declared.  "We leave as soon as we're ready."
The two ate a light breakfast and then headed out through Viridian Forest toward Pewter City.  Every now and then, Tom would look back at Kelly, who was having a hard time keeping up with him.  She looked more and more run down every time he glanced at her.  Her eyes were glazed over as she just stared at the ground in front of her.
Pichu was as concerned as Tom.  He placed his paw on her cheek.  Alarmed, he hopped onto Tom's shoulder.
"What is it, Pichu?" Tom questioned.
"Pi," Pichu replied, pointing at Kelly.
Tom stopped in his tracks to see what the matter was.
"Are you okay, Kelly?" he asked.
"I need to sit down," she uttered, practically falling to the ground.  Tom knelt down beside her and felt her forehead.
"You're burning up!" he gasped.  "No wonder you couldn't sleep last night."
"I don't feel so good," Kelly groaned, shivering.
"Come on, I'll help you," Tom said.  "The Pokemon Center in Pewter City isn't very far."
At first, Kelly tried walking again with Tom's help, but eventually she couldn't even stand.  Tom carried her the rest of the way to Pewter City.
It was late afternoon by the time they reached the Pokemon Center.  Tom rushed through the automatic doors with Kelly in his arms and Pichu on his shoulder.  Kelly had fallen asleep.
"Oh my!" Nurse Joy exclaimed.  "What happened?"
"My friend is really sick," Tom explained.  "There are no human hospitals near here.  Can you help us?"
"Of course," Joy replied.  "Just put her on one of the beds in here."
Nurse Joy led them to a room to the left where Pokemon trainers can spend the night.  Tom gently laid Kelly in the nearest bed.  A Chansey appeared with a tray of supplies.  She handed Nurse Joy a thermometer.  Joy put the thermometer in Kelly's mouth.
Kelly's eyes fluttered open, apparently startled by the thermometer.  She looked around confusingly.
"It's okay Kelly," Tom assured her.  "You're at the Pokemon Center."
Pichu jumped off of Tom's shoulder and onto the bed next to Kelly.  She patted her pokemon on the head and smiled weakly.
Joy took the thermometer out of Kelly's mouth and checked it, looking slightly alarmed.
"102," she stated.  "Chansey, go fill a bag with some ice."
Kelly shivered.  "But I'm already cold."
"You've got the chills," Joy explained.  "We need to get your fever down."
Chansey quickly returned with a small bag of ice and placed it on Kelly's forehead.  Her eyes closed again as she fell back asleep.
Tom looked at Nurse Joy with concern in his eyes.  "Is she going to be okay?"
"She'll be fine," Joy assured him.  "She just needs to rest.  You can wait in the waiting room if you would like."
Tom looked back down at Kelly and uttered, "Yeah.  Come on, Pichu.  Let Kelly sleep."
Pichu reluctantly climbed onto his shoulder, looking back at Kelly the entire way out of the room.

Later that evening, Tom was the only one in the waiting room of the Pokemon Center.  After seeing Kelly's condition, he knew his ambitions of getting to Mt. Moon that night were unrealistic.  He decided to call Robert in Saffron City to give him a heads up on the situation.  Sitting down at one of the video phones, he dialed the Saffron City Pokemon Center.
"Hey Tom!" Robert exclaimed happily on the other end.
"Hey," Tom replied.  "How's the conference going?"
"It's great!  Professor Birch and I have gone to some fascinating seminars these past few days," Robert told him.
"That's awesome," Tom commented.  "I called to tell you that Kelly and I are going to be a little late meeting you in Cerulean City."
"Is everything okay?" Robert questioned.
"Kelly's sick," Tom explained.  "She came down with a really high fever this morning.  We'll probably be in Pewter City for a couple days."
"Oh no, I hope she's okay," Robert said.  "Well, don't worry about being late.  I'm having a blast here at the conference.  Now I can stay a couple more days!"
Tom chuckled.  "Well that's one way of putting it I suppose.  I'll see you later, Robert."
"Bye!" Robert shouted before hanging up.
Tom sighed as he hung up the phone, wondering what to do next.  He then realized this was the perfect time to start reading that book Robert gave him before going to the conference.  Tom took a seat on one of the couches and read, trying to keep poor Pichu company.
Every now and then, Tom noticed Chansey peering out the window with melancholy in her eyes.
"I don't know what's wrong with Chansey," Nurse Joy sighed as she took a seat next to Tom.  "Sometimes I think she's not happy here in the Pokemon Center."
"Really?" Tom said surprisingly.  "I thought all Chansey liked to be nurses."
"Yeah," Joy agreed.  "But lately, Chansey has been a little anxious, and keeps looking out the window.  I don't know what to do."
Tom shrugged.  He didn't know what to say to Nurse Joy.  Instead, he decided to change the subject.
"How is Kelly doing?" he asked.
"She's still sleeping," Joy told him.  "I checked her temperature again earlier.  It's gone down a little but it's still pretty high."
Tom nodded.  He looked down at Pichu, who was staring up at him with the most pathetically sad expression he'd ever seen.  Pichu tugged on his shirt sleeve anxiously.
"Pichu, she's sleeping," Tom said.  "You can see her later."
The tiny pokemon's eyes began to water and lips began to quiver.
"He has a little bit of separation anxiety," Tom whispered to Joy.  "She raised him from an egg.  That's one reason why he's never in his pokeball."
Joy nodded.  She reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a piece of paper.
"Here, why don't you and Pichu run an errand for me?" Joy said.  "It'll help get his mind off it.  I'm starting to run low on supplies.  Here's a list you can take to the Pharmacy.  I believe it's still open."
"Ok," Tom said.  "But I'm not sure where it is.  It's been a long time since I've been to Pewter City."
"Take Chansey with you," Joy suggested.  "She looks like she can use a distraction as well."
"Alright," Tom said as he stood up.  "Can you watch my bag for me while we're gone?"
"Of course," Nurse Joy replied with a smile.

Tom walked out of the store with a paper bag in his arms, accompanied by Chansey and Pichu, who was now happily seated on Chansey's head.  The two pokemon chattered happily as they walked down the street.  Tom was happy to see both of them in higher spirits.  He also hoped that Kelly would get better soon.  It wouldn't be the same without her in the cheering section at his first Frontier battle.
"Pi…" Pichu said sadly, seeming to agree with his sentiment.
"Pichu, I swear you can read my mind sometimes," Tom laughed.  "Are you sure you're not part psychic type?"
Pichu and Chansey laughed at his comment as they approached the Pokemon Center.  Tom opened the front door to reveal a horrifying sight.
Two agents of Team Rocket had Nurse Joy tied to a chair and all of the pokeballs stashed in a bag.  When they turned to see them, they laughed.
"My my, look who we have here!" the blonde female taunted.
"Team Rocket!" Tom shouted angrily.  "Something told me you'd come after my Pokemon after I became Champion!"
The two Team Rocket Members laughed and began to recite their motto.
"Prepare for trouble."
"Make it double."
"To infect the world with devastation."
"To blight all peoples within our nation."
"To denounce the goodness of truth and love."
"To extend our wrath to the stars above."
"Cassidy."
"Butch."
"Team Rocket circling the earth both day and night!"
"Surrender to us now or you'll surely lose the fight!"
Team Rocket stood there looking proud of themselves while Tom fought his gag reflexes.
"That was nauseating," he uttered.  He reached for his belt, but felt no pokeballs.  The Team Rocket agents laughed maniacally, holding up his backpack.
"Looking for this?" Cassidy taunted.  "Now if you'll excuse us, we'll be off with your pokemon."
Tom's anger nearly set the two ablaze.  Frustrated with his bad habit of taking his pokemon off his belt, he gritted his teeth as he tried to formulate a plan to get his pokemon back.  Just then, he saw an egg fly by his head toward Team Rocket.  The ground near their feet exploded.  Tom whipped around and looked at Chansey, who had a determined smile spread across her face.
            "That was you?" Tom gasped.
"Chan!" Chansey replied, looking eager to battle.
            Team Rocket laughed.
"Oh no, a Chansey!" Butch laughed sarcastically.  "How will we ever manage to get out of this one?"
Chansey nearly exploded with anger.  She began to hurl egg bombs by the dozens toward Team Rocket.
"Better watch your mouth, Biff!" Tom laughed.
"The name is BUTCH!" Butch exploded.
"Enough of this!" Cassidy agent interrupted.  She whipped out a pokeball and tossed it.  Her partner did the same.  A Primeape and Raticate appeared in front of them.
"Raticate, use Super Fang!"  Cassidy commanded.  Raticate hurled itself toward Chansey with its teeth barred.
"Chansey, dodge it!" Tom instructed.  Chansey obeyed and successfully avoided Raticate's attack.
"Primeape, Karate Chop!" Butch shouted with a hint of frustration in his voice.
"Dodge again and attack!" Tom countered, not knowing exactly what moves Chansey knew.  Chansey got the message, dodging and hitting Primeape with Double Slap.
While Chansey took care of Team Rocket, Tom untied Nurse Joy.
"Do you know what moves Chansey knows?" he asked her.  "She's the only defense we have against them."
Joy looked dumbfounded.  "I have no idea.  I've never battled with her before!"
The two looked over at Chansey, who was pelting Team Rocket with egg bombs.
"She seems to be getting along by herself though," Joy pointed out.
Tom and Nurse Joy took cover behind the counter as a giant explosion blasted a hole in the roof of the Pokemon Center.  The duo of Team Rocket and their pokemon was blasted into the air, leaving behind all of the pokemon they attempted to steal.  As the dust settled, Tom and Nurse Joy stared at Chansey with their mouths hanging wide open.  Chansey stood panting, but with a huge smile on her face.
Just then, the door to the room Kelly was in opened slowly.  Kelly emerged with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders, her eyes halfway open.
"What is going on in here?" she groaned.
"Uh…" Tom and Joy stammered.
Kelly looked out at the damage in the waiting room.  She blinked tiredly and turned around, heading back into the room.
"Goodnight," she grumbled, shutting the door behind her.
Tom and Joy looked at each other and shrugged.

The next morning, the waiting room looked as if it hadn't been touched.  With the help of Tom and his pokemon, the debris was cleared away and the furniture was put back in its original place.
"Don't worry about the roof," Nurse Joy told him.  "That's best left to the professionals."
Tom chuckled.  "Alright, if you insist."
Suddenly, Pichu's ears perked up.  Tom and Nurse Joy watched as the tiny pokemon ran happily toward the room where Kelly was.  Kelly stood in the doorway, yawning.  Pichu jumped happily into her arms.  Kelly smiled and patted her pokemon's head.
"Hey Kelly," Tom said, slightly surprised.  "How are you feeling?"
            "Hungry," Kelly stated flatly.
"Well that's a good sign," Joy commented.  "That must mean you're getting better."
"And you barely ate anything all day yesterday," Tom added.  "I'm glad you're feeling better."
Kelly smiled for the first time since she got sick.  "Me too."
As Kelly took a seat on a couch, Chansey brought her a bowl of oatmeal.  Kelly ate it as if it were about to disappear.  Tom and Nurse Joy chuckled.
"Tom, I've been meaning to ask you," Nurse Joy began.  "Will you take Chansey with you on your journey?"
            Tom's eyes widened.  "What?"
"Well you see, I've never seen her as happy as when she battled those thieves last night," Joy explained.  "I now realize that Chansey really wants to battle and travel, rather than be cooped up here in the Pokemon Center."
"Chansey!" Chansey cheered excitedly, hearing what Nurse Joy said.  She bounced happily around Tom.
Tom looked down at the enthusiastic pokemon and smiled.  "I'll be happy to take her with me."
Chansey looked as if she were about to explode with happiness.  Suddenly, Chansey began to glow.
"She's evolving!" Nurse Joy cried.  Soon, a happy Blissey stood in front of them.
"Did I miss something?" Kelly said confusingly.
Tom and Nurse Joy laughed as Blissey jumped up and down happily at the prospect of pursuing her dreams.
