The air was dry and hot, with no hint of a breeze to bring relief to the horses and humans assembled at the Annual Akhal Teke Auction. Two-legged bidders fanned themselves and hid under awnings or trees, seeking the shade. The four-legged attendees were less distressed; they were built for this hot and arid weather, with their sparse, burnished coats and their lean frames working to dispel the heat in the most efficient manner possible. They fidgeted and stomped, more irritated by the flies and the waiting than by the heat.

The stallion currently up for auction was a long-legged black with four tall stockings, gaunt even among his already-thin peers. His ribs stuck out in sharp prominence, and his hipbones jutted out like bony spikes. On top of that, his behavior was not exactly stellar; he had already tried to bite the handler twice, and his ears were pinned back as a promise of further misbehavior. Most of the audience members were looking him over with obvious skepticism, and there were no immediate bids when his name was called.

The Khamsin Stables owner, Dante, looked around at the other audience members and shrugged. His pockets were not deep, and this horse was probably the only chance he had to win an Akhal Teke from the Association. Besides, something about this spunky black stallion appealed to him, a certain pride and wildness in his demeanor that stood out like a challenge.

Dante raised his hand to place the first bid, fingers crossed in the hope that nobody would bid against him.
