I shouldn't have done that but I had to. I had this idea in my head and I couldn't get it out. >.<

A letter Elijah wrote to his best friend Francis who is on "detention" in Romania staying at a local Vampire clan. Elijah and Francis are very close since the 1950s when Francis came to Elijah's London clan, a vampire only some weeks old, dropped off by his vampire father to be taken care of by clan leader Thanatos.
Francis had had many problems in his short life due to being gay and it was Elijah who built him up. He took the young vampire in and showed him how much fun you can have... and how little responsible you have to be. They became something Elisabeth, Elijah's sister, loves to call "The Disaster Team". Elijah and Francis know how to party. And it's not a party until something gets broken you say...
When things got out of hand Viktor, Elijah's vampire father, and Thanatos stepped in. Francis got send to Romania to be taught to behave so to speak but time will tell that it wasn't of much use.
When he returns to London shortly before Elijah does with Alessio the team is back together again. Only problem is Francis starts to feel something about Alessio you shouldn't feel about your best friends lover...

Despite the modern clothes that Alessio and Elijah are wearing, for some reason this keeps making me think of the 1930s. I don't know why exactly - the texture of the letter paper, the handwriting, the colour scheme? The whole style and theme is like a blending of Agatha Christie and HP Lovecraft - it looks like something out of a murder/horror mystery. It you read the letter, it's just Elijah sending Francis a postcard, but it doesn't have the inconsequential feel of a postcard. It has gravitas - a hint that the letter and photo are important clues to a vital plot point. The first thing I thought of when I saw it was that scene in Murder on the Orient Express, where Poirot is inspecting Rachett's compartment and mutters "There are too many clues in this room". It has that same appearance of personal items left casually lying around. And just as in a whodunnit, it's paradoxically the apparent casualness of the way that they've been left lying around that makes them seem significant. You've assembled the different elements very cleverly to create that impression. The little details - like the shadows around the lower corner of the letter and the saucer - really do make a big difference to the visual impact.

The saucer looks as though it has a red base at first glance - until you notice the shadows, like ripples in a liquid surface, and wonder if it's blood. The small part of the letter opener that's visible was a clever touch - most of it is hidden, out of sight, but the tip is in the (blood?). The combination of those two things made me look at it and think - has it been used for something more than opening letters?

Alessio looks rather smug in this  "Look what I've got!" - like a puppy feeling pleased with his new squeaky toy. Elijah looks happy to be the toy, though!
