wolf hyena full body compare

See below for explanation of numbers. Yes they are in a random order but its more...fun.... that way. I tried to point out the main differences, obviously there are lots of little differences. The best thing to do is use a lot of refs. I hope this helps people drawing hyenas. I do plan to do a major hyena tutorial at some point.

1) The hyenas back is more sloped than the wolfs, however the slope is not huge, sometimes it is hardly noticable, the wolfs back is not a ram rod, instead it curves ever so slightly upwards.

2) The wolfs neck appears thicker than the hyenas, though this is due to long fur here, the top and bottom lines move apart from the jaw to the shoulders, whereas in the hyena they run pretty much parrellel.

3) The wolfs chest is flat and the belly slopes upwards towards the back end, the hyenas chest and belly slope downwards and then sharply upwards toward the back end. Wolves are generally quite slender, despite their fluffiness whereas hyenas can be pretty fat.

4) Hyenas have a mane, the hair slopes upwards and can be errected, this is more noticable in other hyena species. "while some have noteable manes while others are merely tufts, the back of their neck does have reversed fur at all times" AddictonHalfWay

5) Hyenas have a far more pronounced carpal joint, in wolves this is barely noticable.

6) The chest and shoulder muscles are much more pronounced in the hyena than the wolf.

7) The wolf's tail is larger and bushier, the hyenas has longer hair which can be bushed out into a 'bottle' brush.

8) The hyenas head is larger in comparison to its body than the wolfs, I did a comparison between hyena and wolf heads here [link]
