Description
Theodora Durham has never left her sleepy village in the English countryside. Now, the idealistic young engineer finds herself selected as part of the royal surveying mission—to the Orient. The hodgepodge team (featuring an embittered Duke, a no-nonsense military man, an artful socialite, and a stuttering doctor) journey to Beijing, where they are to negotiate for support of King Richard’s pet project: a truly transcontinental railroad. This support, however, must be won from Empress Jiang, a beautiful, charismatic young woman with her own dangerous agenda.
For Theodora, the Empress is a mystery waiting to be solved. For Jiang, the engineer is an outsider free of pretentions. They become each other’s confidants; they strike up an impossible friendship amidst an atmosphere of political turmoil.
Between the railroad that can’t be built, the rebellion that can’t be discussed, and the romance that can’t be acknowledged, nothing is what it seems. It’s untenable.
