Location: Kiev (Kyiv) , Ukraine
This image perturbs me immensely and churns my stomach.
This image was taken at the top of the Kreyshatic, (The Kreyshatic can be likened to the Rodeo Drive of Kiev.) close to the underground market, by the stairs that lead out of the metro station. Its common to find drunks, druggies and homeless people here, all times of the day.
I was walking past them and for some reason, (something must have caught my eye), I turned and snapped this image.
Two of the men immediately got up and started shouting at me in russian, and pointing to my camera ..(another picture that got me into trouble) .. they were soon joined by a few other drunks or druggies. I looked at them and pretended I understand what the fuss was about, but it was something to do with the picture I had taken.
I looked at them and then turned around and walked away as one does sauntering down the Kreyshatic .. ..(fingers crossed that nothing would happen and they wouldnt strike me from behind)
Later when I got to the hotel and reviewed the photograph in detail .. the little one sitting huddled in the cold, with the three old, druggies, drunks and homeless ...Is a GIRL, barely 10 or 11, I would guess, the only give away is the high heeled boots she is wearing.
My stomach churned at the thoughts that ran through my mind, why how what is she doing with them .. hopeless homeless despair destitute anguish pain .are just the start of a long list of adjectives that could barely describe what she must be feeling.

God what kind of world do we live in? There are so many observations you can have about this image. It's obvious this little girl is very sad and she looks cold as well. But where are her parents? I would never want to be a child her age and be in this terrible predicament. What I do not understand is why hasn't someone investigated this and what is going on here for the benefit of the child? Aren't there places in your country that protect their children? I think the reason the people may have gotten angry at you is because you had a camera in your hand and they did not know what your intentions were for example you could had been a reporter and maybe try to expose them in some way. Your lucky that they did not beat you up as you hear these things happening all the time. Powerful image
