The contest is now CLOSED!!!!!!!!!!  awesome work to everyone who was able to participate this time.  WE got some serious turnout this time, much moreso than the previous contest.  Judging will take place during this week.  

for those who were unable to join or work something out this time, dont worry, there will always be future opportunities to participate in future contests.  The next one will not be a collaboration contest.  I do realize it caused alot of problems this time around, but it happens.

Last major update 5/8

Sorry for the constant journal spam folks, this is the last bit i swear.  Anyway, TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT mountain time (-7gmt) the contest will close.  This means from the time this journal is posted to the deadline you have 13 hours to finish your entries and send them to me.  I will be up late tonight so I will put your stuff in for ya.  Expect +entry updates alot today.  Glad you all could join.  Also, I apologize to the loads of you who had issues and had fall-thru's with entries.  In retrospect the collaboration idea was creative, but it probably wasn't the best of ideas but hey, trial and error right?  No idea when the next contest will be but it will be an individual entrant basis (plus I need to do more reference sheets before).   

Buckle down, this is the last little bit!  

Also the judging will take me a day or so because of how I'm doing it.  Rather than just picking 'what I like most', I've programmed a VBA Microsoft excel sheet with several categories on a point scale.  I will sit down with each picture for a while and evaluate them on this scale for several individual criteria (quality of certain elements, concepts, etc) and then I will add up the resulting totals.  This way, I have more of a method to this madness and I can fully appreciate the pics you've done for me.  After all, you've spent days on these.  The least I can do is really soak them up for every little tasty bit they have.

Edit (4/17/2012) (TWO WEEKS REMAINING)
There is approximately TWO WEEKS! in the contest and we only have ONE ENTRY.   Be advised that, as it stands, it is ANYONE's game.  The official contest deadline is MAY 1 unless the 1 week emergency period is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.  Also, you must follow contest rules to have your entry accepted. Please read the journal entirely if you are interested.  Cash Prizes and full color pictures are up for grabs!

If you plan on entering and DO NOT HAVE A PARTNER, it is STRONGLY advised that you find one ASAP before you hit the crunch.  Any pictures submitted outside the emergency deadline (after May 7th) WILL NOT BE JUDGED and you will not be eligible for the contest.

Ladies and gentleman, It's contest time!  This time last year I opened up my first contest, "into the supercell".  It's time again to up the ante with bigger risks and bigger rewards.

welcome to the Eye of the storm

This contest has been on my mind since May of last year and was delayed from May, to August, to October, to now because people were participating in other contests and such.  Now I think is probably the most appropriate time to start something big, right as 2012 kicks off with a bang.  How is this contest bigger? Well in almost every way.  Finalized character references are available, a more challenging and rewarding theme, bigger and better prizes than last year.  Plus, WE have a slightly larger audience this time (I was only about 10k last at this time, so we can really get some more action.

Now the theme is a bit tricky but can really offer some explosive potential for some amazing art, AND it allows for some crazy opportunities for you guys.  The theme?

TEAM/COLLABORATION PICTURES

This time around, you will not be able to work alone.  YOU MUST form a team with one other individual ( FORMING TEAMS NO GREATER THAN TWO PEOPLE) to complete a drawing!  Then, you two must pick a team name (because it makes announcing winners easier) and submit a picture that both of you work on.  The resulting picture should bring out the best in both artists.  I chose this theme for multiple reasons:

•It allows for pictures that would otherwise be impossible by one user, combining styles to create never-before-seen mashups of epic proportions.
•It allows for individuals to branch out, make friends, and expand in the community through cooperation.
•It creates a challenge that would be hard to obtain in a single artist environment.

It's a tricky theme, but it allows a ton of freedom.  HOWEVER, NO SINGLE ENTRANTS will be accepted.  YOU MUST WORK WITH ANOTHER PERSON OR YOUR WORK WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO ENTER.  



What is allowed?

Teams of two people (no more, no less)
Up to 2 entries per team (however you MAY form a team with another and reenter)
Digital and traditional is allowed and will be weighed equally.  No digital bias here
Human/anime interpretations of characters are allowed.
Both participants will be allowed to upload the picture they finish and both will be added to the folder marked for entries.  You dont need to argue over who gets to upload.  HOWEVER, be sure to link your partner's entry in your comments.
BOTH ARTISTS MUST BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN WHAT THEY DID IN THE PICTURE.  If I find that one person did all the work, the picture will be disqualified.

What is NOT allowed?

ANY MATURE CONTENT OF ANY KIND (immediate disqualification)
Hentai, Yaoi, Yuri of any kind (immediate disqualification)
Teams less or greater than 2 people
Any art unrelated to the Syron Universe/ your own fan character (such as official characters or characters outside the Sonic fandom) (will not be judged)
Harassment/ arguing/ deliberate poor sportsmanship toward any individuals/ teams in the contest (immediate disqualification)
Receiving assistance from ANYONE outside the team (if I find that a 3rd artist has in ANY way contributed to your piece, it will be disqualified)

What can I draw?

The contest revolves around the Syron Universe, therefore it should be associated with the characters in the Syron Universe (Syron, Faulkner, Cassira, Kaius etc.)  Here are some potential ideas as to what you can draw.

(you are not restricted to these ideas, so be creative.  these are just to help)
Your two fan characters vs Syron/Faulkner or Cassira/Syron or Kaius (any two team pairing)
Team Supercell (Syron's team of Syron, Cassira, and Faulkner) vs. Your teams or team.
Individual characters
Sonic Rider themed
Syron vs Kaius
Supercell vs Kaius
SyronxCassira

and more!

Faulkner: Gravity Manipulation
Cassira: Light Manipulation
Kaius: Pyrokinetic

Kaius = Evil/Villainy

Please DO NOT alter the existing outfits/appearances of the characters unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.  They are designed with their current appearances for a reason as it reflects their personalities and behaviors in their storylines.





You read correct.  The prizes this time are pretty substantial and since I only do this once a year, I thought it'd be good to up the ante this time around.

There will only be a first and second place team, but that encourages more competition.  Both members of the winning team get stuff, lots of it.

First place?  Both members will receive EITHER $50 or 4000 depending on your preference (or if you own paypal or not) AND both members will receive a FULL picture FROM ME containing up to 3 characters of their choice (read my artist info for stuff I will or will not draw).

Second place members will BOTH receiver EITHER $25 or 2000 AND a FULL color picture from me containing up to 1 character (full body and bg of course).

Damn son! that's a lot of prizes!  I did remove the special categories this time as I wanted to make the Big prizes more substantial this time around.   Bigger reward right?  So Good teamwork will result in a big win.

As far as judging, it will EITHER be me or a panel.  I try to eliminate as much bias as possible (although I know having 0 bias is near impossible in a contest) And I will most likely do what I did last time: Have non dA members evaluate each picture.  Therefore Popularity bias is thrown out.  Also, the digital vs Trad bias is going to be nonexistant as you all know a Traditional picture won the last contest.  Anyone can win with any medium if it's good enough.  

To send a picture to me, upload it, note me with it in the note, and tell me the Team name in which you came up with so I can post it.  You'll see why this is relevant as the contest progresses.





Now for the most vital contest information, the deadline.


THE DEADLINE IS MAY 1's 2012.  a strict 1 WEEK EMERGENCY EXTENTION WILL BE PROVIDED ONLY IF NEEDED.

Judging will take place over the following week at MOST.  I often see too many contests drag out indefinitely either by indecisiveness of the artist or the desire for more "entries".  I won't keep you waiting.  However, I'm making the contest this long for a fairly big consideration:

•The time it takes to find a team member is fairly difficult if you don't have many connections.  4 Months should provide plenty of time to both find a good member and to get a good entry going.  IF you are shy, just ask around.  Also, link the journal if anyone is curious or unaware.  It'll work wonders.  This is meant to get you to open up and really see what the community is like and that we're all just silly little artists in a big happy box.  Don't be scared to ask, but try to find someone that you think will compliment your style well, not just because they're an experienced artist (or not in alot of cases).  GO out, get to know someone new if you need to, make friends, and bring home the win!  It seems like a daunting challenge, but you can do it.
