My thoughts on Turtles:Extinction Or Survival? by Sarah R. Riedman and Ross Witham was that turtles are really interesting. The three topics I will reflect on are "The different kinds of turtles.", "The food they eat" and "Taking Care of a Pet Turtle."
I learned that there are different kinds of turtles. There are Tortoises, turtles that live on land or dry areas, such as deserts. There are also Turtles, they live in lakes, the ocean, rivers and swamps. Finally there are Terrapins. Terrapins are actually just a sub-group of turtles that live in fresh and brackish water. These turtles are called "Terrapins" by the people living in the United Kingdom.
I have always wondered what kinds of foods turtles eat. At first I thought they only ate bugs and lettuce. Diets vary between the different kinds of turtles (turtles, tortoises and terrapins) greatly. Turtles actually eat small fish. crayfish, snails, crickets,aquatic insects, and aquatic and land vegetation. Tortoises eat grasses, weeds, leafy greens, flowers, and some fruits. Most tortoises are herbivores, but some of them eat worms and insects, making them omnivores. Terrapins aren't that diferent then turtles, except for their diet. Terrapins eat periwinkle snails, marsh plants, shrimp clams and mussels.
Taking care of a pet turtle is very different than one taking care of itself in the wild. Pet turtles have many requirements to live comfortably in an enclosure. Some requirements are that they have shade, regular light, basking light, proper moisture, ad an item to hide in (a log or some rocks). Since some turtles may carry the disease Salomenlla, it is important to keep the living space for the turtle clean, and to sanitize areas the turtle had touched. It also is a very good idea to have the turtle tested for diseases at the most local veterinarian that takes turtle patients.
