I urged Pistol forward and we stepped out into the pouring rain. Pistol and I were instantly soaked as he walked towards the starting line for the cross country event. We had been training for ages for this and I believed we were ready. Pistol shuffled on the spot, dripping streams. The rain was bitingly cold and I rolled up my sleeves to get rid of the awful feeling of sodden fabric.
We surged forward on the 'go' signal and went over the first jump. We raced through the forest at a steady, even pace and leaping everything in our way. We jumped a log jump and dove into the water across from it. We went uphill a little and came out of the trees. We completed another obstacle before entering forest again, before coming out in the open again. Water streamed from my sleeves and boots as we dashed through more forest and over the finish line. I rubbed Pistol's neck and quickly urged him on towards the stables.
"Good boy!" I told the stallion. "Now, let's get you dried off."

Blue hopped into the front seat as I finished securing the dog crates in the horse trailer. Indie and Dax along with Pistol were going to Run The World Stables to compete. Dax would strut his stuff in the conformation right and Indie would run the agility course.
I stood up and turned around to see Pistol where I'd left him, outside the trailer of the grass. He was alright with loading, but didn't mean he loved it. He was tethered to the side of the trailer in his shipping gear. He wore a padded halter, neon green shipping boots and a rug.
I untied him and lead his up into the brand new trailer. Our old one was second hand and didn't have many safety features. That was back when we just had Pistol and I had modified one side into a full tack room on wheels. But I sold it, somehow someone was willing to buy it, and bought a new two-horse angle load trailer.
I grabbed the stallion's lead rope and slowly led him up the rubber floored ramp into the float. I led his around and secured the padded safety sides that boxed him in. I pulled a carrot out of my pocket and his eyes lit up. In a couple of crunches, it was gone and quickly did up the over safety box sides so they didn't swing about and pushed the float door up. I locked it and went over a mental checklist
Riding bag with jods, helmet and stuff, check. Tack and grooming stuff, check. Bag for the dogs, check. Bag for me, check. I thought.
