Literature Text

With vicious threats and the crash of objects being thrown against a door open ajar, Mias left Elle to herself for three whole days. He was by no means offended by her actions and harsh shouting and name calling as he may have been previously, as he could not contain his amusement and curiosity. He wanted to know what could have possibly transpired between the two women to put Elle in such a strange mood. She blushed scarlet and her brow furrowed whenever he opened her door to bring her food, fair warning she seemed to think before the name calling began. He would laugh, wish her well and leave her to her own devices.

Yet on the third day, he had grown tired of the new game that they had been playing at. He wished to look in to her eyes, touch her skin, and hear her voice untainted by screaming. The thought of seeing her smile at him was still a strong image that still nagged and prodded at his brain. He was a man who always got what he wanted, but this seemed to be something that was always just out of his reach; it vexed him so. But Mias had a wonderful idea, and plated Elle's breakfast quickly and made his way up the stairs to her door even faster.

"Breakfast, my pet." After waiting to be greeted with the usual silence, he opened the door for the real greeting that he was used to.

"Sod off, Mias."

The vicious bite that her voice had possessed the past three days had faded to a lazy growl of discontentment. He smiled at her hidden form under the silk sheets with a pillow held over her head, the only pale and enchanting skin that was showing was that of the arm bracing the pillow firmly. The shape of her hips, legs and buttocks on her side were well defined in the rise and fall of the sheet. Mias took a breath slightly heavier than the others, but shook it off quickly.

"Now, now, my pet… I have a gift for you." Mias sat next to her and tried to peek under the pillow, only managing to catch a glimpse of a small fraction of her soft cheek.

"I did not care for your last gift, why would I want this one?"

"I am sorry that you did not. Shall I return them since you did not care for them?"

Elle sat up to the left of Mias and the pillow flopped to the floor, "No, I do!"

"Do you?" He figured he could string her along until he got the answer he wanted, "I couldn't tell."

She scoffed, "I appreciated the gesture… The freedom. And of course the clothes; it was very generous. But that woman!"

Elle let out a muffled cry of frustration and held up her hands to enact a gesture of strangulation on the air to solidify her point. Mias laughed so fully and honestly that Elle could not help but laugh herself. It was shocking; she had never laughed like this before, and Mias obviously noticed. She looked away when he stopped his laughter and smiled at her.

"I have never seen this side of you."

"And I have never met such an infuriating person!"

"Yes, well…" Mias looked at her and then at the mess of bags scattered near the door, "I hope that you will treat this gift with a little more care than the last."

Elle covered her face with her hands and groaned in her embarrassment, "I'm sorry."

"It's alright," A low chuckle of amusement rumbled in his belly as he passed her the plate of her breakfast on top of the gift. "Take it."

The smile on Mias' face made her uneasy, but she set out her hands to accept the plate and what appeared to be a box that her breakfast was placed on top of. She took in a deep breath through her nose and could not help but lick her lips.

"It smells delicious."

Mias rolled his eyes and her, "Forget the food. Look!" He lifted the plate away.

What Elle saw lying in the palms of her hands made her heart leap and her eyes widen with excitement. Her mouth opened a closed several times without a single sound coming out, and she looked at Mias and back at the book more than once.

"I don't know what to say!"

"Obviously," He laughed.

Caressing the intricately carved leather cover, she smiled and tried to discreetly glance up at Mias. He was watching her, but was too distracted to notice her doing the very same to him. The heat in her cheeks that intensified as his smile grew; she had to look away before her face starting feeling as if it were going to melt.

"It's very beautiful." The comment made her want to smack herself in the forehead with said beautiful book. Seriously, Elle? "What is it?"

"It's a book."

She glared at him from under her eyebrows, "I'm not stupid, Mias…"

"Ah, yes… It is merely a collection of fairy tales and folk songs mostly intended for children, but it seemed like something you might enjoy."

Elle made a face and smacked Mias in the arm with book, hard enough to simply make a point. "A children's book? What are you implying, sir?"

The black feathers on the rim of Mias' cloak appeared to ruffle like that of an agitated bird, which only made Elle giggle. His brow furrowed and he gave her an intense look of confused irritation.

"I'm joking, Mias. I love it," She placed her hand gently on top of his. "Thank you."

Mias' gaze softened almost immediately at her touch and looked up at her with a different kind of smile. The look of surprise on his face was even more so surprising to Elle. Her forehead wrinkled in confusion and she pulled her hand away slowly, watching Mias' expression fade to normal until he looked as he always did when the contact was broken.

What the hell was that…?

How… strange…

Elle broke the discomforting eye contact, and opened the book to preoccupy her mind with other thoughts as quickly as possible. Though, what she saw was not at all what she was expecting. The pages that were opened to her were quite obviously covered with prose of some kind. She made several strange faces as her brain desperately tried to interpret what it was exactly that she was seeing, but it was impossible. All that she could make from it was swirls, dots and line that somewhat resembled Arabic, but mixed with Mandarin as well. Either way, it made absolutely no sense to her, which only made her assume that is was some kind of cruel joke on Mias' part, after all he was smiling at her.

"What the hell is this?" She could not help the offended tone of her voice.

"I thought we covered this; it is a book."

Shoving the book in his face, Elle tapped her index finger against the page. Mias, obviously not understanding, pushed the book down out of his field of vision so that he could look her in the face. His expression made her feel ashamed for getting so angry with him, but she could not help it. She still felt anger and resentment towards him for what he had done, and it was not going to go away over night because of a few kind gestures.

"My apologies. I should not have assumed that you could read my language." He rummaged through various pockets about his person before pulling out what appeared to be an oversized monocle, "Try this."

Glaring, Elle made no move to set the book down or take this third gift. She could not ignore the part of her brain that whispered that he was simply trying to blind her to his intentions with gifts. Yet, the other part of her could not ignore the comfort that it gave her when he looked at her the way that he was currently. It was something that she could not explain, like a mother's intuition or the pull of the universe that some would call fate; it was slightly nauseating.

At first Mias looked as though he was ready to challenge her, and when he reached out she could not even deny that she cringed as though expecting him to lash out at her insolence. Of course, he did no such thing; he only wrapped his arms around her and pushed the open book down into her lap on the pages that she had so rudely shoved into his face. He then offered her the glass piece, but she hesitated.

"Still so suspicious! Is there no pleasing you?" He placed the glass over one of the pages, "Are you satisfied?"

Under the glass piece the words appeared in plain English before her, and in her surprise she fell back against Mias' chest and into his arms. She could feel that he was there, but the shock of what she was seeing and the excitement of actually having a book to read were far too exciting. She also wanted to reply to his teasing with some nasty words, but the feeling easily pushed aside by the delightful way that the word "faeries" was translated so she may read it under the glass.

Lips slowly parting in awe, she tentatively pushed the glass across the page to reveal more of the sentence. It was the beginning of a story telling of mischievous faeries stealing jewels and luring the poor to do their bidding. It was a fantastical tale that Elle could not read fast enough, and she tried her best not to tear the pages in her earnestness.

She finished the one story quickly, and immediately turned the page to a tale with a description of a ghost bride who haunted a wood in search of her husband. So excited by the romantic synopsis, she unintentionally began to read aloud. Soon lost in the beautiful words, she smiled as she read with great heart and intensity to her words.

Mias found himself content in her pleasure and rested his cheek against her head, his eyes watching her hands ghost the monocle swiftly across the pages and his left hand stroking hers as it rested at the edge of the book motionless. Once she tried to shuffle away from him, but he simply followed her movements without changing their position. She did not try again, and seemed to accept his presence by leaning in to him as though he were merely a pillow; he certainly did not mind.

They stayed like this through the duration of the morning and a fair portion of the afternoon; the time it took Elle to read five stories and two poems out loud as Mias listened intently. They would have continued this way well into the evening had they not been interrupted half way through their third poem by the muffled but angry growl of Elle's empty stomach.

Pulled away from her trance, Elle paused as the realisation of the position that she was in with Mias settled in. She had been so mesmerised by stories and comfortable with the relaxing position that she had actually allowed Mias dreadfully close. The slammed the book closed and hopped a good foot to the left to create what little distance between them she could manage with the headboard and wall in her way.

"Look at the time!"

Mias gave her a suspicious look, it was quite obvious that there was no clock or time piece of any kind within her field of vision, and the curtains of the balcony were closed so she could not see the position of the sun in the sky. It was a rather blatant defence tactic to gain space between them, but he would let it slide this time for there was a twinge in his own stomach that he could no longer ignore either.

"Indeed… We should fetch you something to eat. Your breakfast had grown cold and untouched."

"Sorry."

"I will forgive you… This time."

By the way that he grinned at her, Elle could tell that he was joking and just shook her head at him with a small giggle. When he offered his arm to her in that gentlemanly fashion she laughed a little harder, but stood up and accepted it with a dramatic and silly curtsy with the edge of his shirt.

The way that his eyes flashed over her made her slightly uncomfortable again. It was embarrassing to think that he knew that she enjoyed wearing his shirt; it was incredibly comfortable, but she knew perfectly well that he would not see it that way.

"Maybe I should put something on first…" She made to move to the washroom where her freshly cleaned clothes had been hanging to dry since early the previous night.

"Nonsense," He firmly held her hand that was wrapped in the crook of his elbow in place. "You look delightful!"

"Uh-huh…"

"It suits you."

Of course you would say something like that. Her head shook at him with a raised eyebrow.

"Come. Our lunch should be ready for us by now."

He tried to pull her out the door towards the hall, but she dug her heels in. Her embarrassed expression confused him, but he also enjoyed the delightful pink that filled her cheeks, warmed her ears and tickled the tip of her nose whenever she looked at him that way.

"I really should put on some trousers."

The washroom door slammed closed without being touched and Elle physically jumped in surprise. She wanted to look at Mias, see if she could see how it was that he had accomplished this, but she could not stop staring at the door.

"How-"

"This is your home now," He tipped her chin to look up at him. "There is no need for discomfort here."

"Fine. You win," She did not like the way he lit up at those words. "This time…"

"Indeed."
