Introduction into Traditional Art

by Lintu47

As part of the Project Educate, this article, which is primarily a feature, wishes to bring to your attention some of the most common forms of traditional art. It also includes a short description about each one of them that leads you into the wonderful world of traditional artworks, so you could appreciate the beauty of the examples at their true value.
Traditional Art represents any art created through the use of real media. It is the most known form of art, as well as the oldest one. Below are the most encountered forms of this art. Enjoy!

Body Art

Body Art is the art made on, with, or consisting of the human body. The most common form of body art are tattoos, but other types include full body tattoo and body painting, as well as branding, scalpelling and shaping (for example tight-lacing of corsets). We will present next only two of these body art forms, tattoos and body painting:

Collage

A collage is a artwork made from assemblaging different forms, thus creating a new whole. It may sometimes include newspaper ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made papers, clippings, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas. The origins of collage can be traced back hundreds of years, but this technique made a dramatic reappearance in the early 20th century as an art form of novelty.

Drawings

A drawing is a form of visual art that uses any number of drawing instruments to mark a two-dimensional medium. Common instruments include graphite pencils, charcoal, pen and ink, inked brushes, wax color pencils, crayons, etc.
The most common support for drawing is paper, although other materials, such as cardboard, plastic, leather, canvas, and board, may be used. Temporary drawings may be made on a blackboard or whiteboard or indeed almost anything. This form of traditional art has been a popular and fundamental means of public expression throughout human history.

Mixed Media

Mixed Media, in visual art, refers to an artwork created by using multiple mediums. Mixed media tends to refer to a work that combines various traditionally distinct visual art media.

Paintings

A paiting represents the art of applying paints to a surface such as canvas, to make a picture or other artistic composition. Paintings may have for their support such surfaces as walls, paper, canvas, wood, glass, clay, leaf, copper or concrete, and may incorporate multiple other materials like sand, clay, paper, gold leaf, etc.

Scratchboard

Scratchboard or scraperboard is a technique where drawings are created using sharp knives and tools for etching into a thin layer of white China clay that is coated with black India ink. Scratchboard can also be made with several layers of multi-colored clay, so the pressure exerted on the instrument used determines the color that is revealed. Scratchboard can be used to obtain highly detailed, precise and even textured artworks.

Sculpture

A Sculpture is a three dimensional artwork created by shaping or combining hard materials or metal, glass, or wood. Softer ("plastic") materials can also be used, such as clay, textiles, plastics, polymers and softer metals.
Materials may be worked by removal such as carving; or they may be assembled such as by welding, hardened such as by firing, molded or cast. Surface decoration such as paint may be applied. Sculpture has been described as one of the plastic arts because it can involve the use of materials that can be moulded or modulated.

Street Art

Street Art is visual art developed in public spaces. The term can include traditional graffiti artwork, sculpture, stencil graffiti, sticker art, wheatpasting and street poster art. Typically, the term street art is used to distinguish contemporary public-space artwork from territorial graffiti, vandalism, and corporate art.
