A biting chill whipped through the air as Hugo pushed Volly up to the starting line, watching the bay stallion before them bolting towards the first hurdle. The brunet man sighed, petting his horse’s thick neck soothingly. He’d been apprehensive about entering his young stud in a Rolex class; having only competed a handful of times before. But to enter Volcanic Ash in anything other seemed almost wasteful to Hugo
Now, however, as they stood between the starting flags, the nerves began to set in, and absently the young man wished he’d warn a jacket as the crisp air nipped at his exposed flesh. He checked his watch; another minute and the whistle would blow, and he shifted in the saddle; checking that his stirrups were in the right position, and adjusting his reins. Every muscle in his body coiled as the suspense thickened, and Volly jigged anxiously beneath him
Hugo checked his watch again, tightening his grip on the leather reins as he counted back from 10. Right on cue the whistle blew. Digging his heals into the bay Waler’s girth, Volly launched himself forward, and within two massively powerful strides bust into a perfectly rhythmic gallop. ‘And an impressive start for Yawarda Stud’, the commentator’s voice boomed over the loud speaker. Hugo grinned widely, readying himself as the first jump loomed closer, and Volly sailed effortlessly over the wooden logs
In an instant every concern Hugo had vanished, and he felt nothing but the wind in his face and the powerful stride of the incredible beast beneath him. His mind blocked out all other train of thought, focused solely on the course ahead; guiding the roaring animal over the obstacles as sweat began to bead over his brow, and Volly’s gleaming bay coat foamed white. His stride quickened as they hit a straight stretch of track, chest heaving and muscles stretching like elastic bands as they tore up the track with an unequalled vehemence. Hugo couldn’t think back to any other time he’d ridden so hard and fast
