Description

"That's right. I was one of them kids; and I always felt bad about that - the way you was treated; how nobody stopped ya, nobody thanked ya. Instead, the ignorant bastards ran ya right out of our town."

I created this piece for the VampireHunterD-Club ( [link] ) for their recent "Anyone Except D" contest.
Polk is the featured character from my favourite scene in the "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" anime. I always wondered what became of him after his few minutes of fame, and this piece has sprung out of that.
A big thank-you to the mods of the VampireHunterD-Club for extending the deadline on the contest! I had been worried that I wouldn't get a chance to enter, and am very glad I did.

Addendum: Upon submitting the image, I realized that the contest wrapped up on February 25, rather than the end of the month. Oops.
Ah well. It was still a nifty break from the norm. =)

11"x 8.5" piece
Main image is Staedtler pigment liners and Laurentian/Prang coloured pencils on computer paper.
Background (outside window) is a digital photo, inserted with GIMP photo-editing. No other digital editing.
Time from blank page to completion: 9 hours - 7 of those at a stretch. :stupidme:

This is a really beautiful piece! I love the way he came out! Polk is one of my favorite characters too! I loved that scene and always wondered about him! I feel bad how everyone else was treating D. It was nice to see this old man who survived this traumatic experience as a child- he probably only saw D for the short time after D rescued him and the other children and returned them home- but always remembered being saved by a brave hunter who was mistreated after he did his job. He was the only one in that town who seemed to care and never forgot what D did for him. And he repayed D not only by standing up for him against the sheriff, but even before that by treating him like anyone else over the sale of his horse instead of treating D like an outcast or with hostility.

This came out so nice. I especially like the detail you put of the bars on the window- reminding us how people lived on the frontier taking precautions against nobles and other night creatures. I hope you win this contest!
