Description
Mara danced around the puppets, pulling their cords and swinging and twirling around the moving limbs. “But there’s such a perfect... beautiful harmony in the world! Wouldn’t it be a grand thing to find the cord, and give it a tug? To watch it all unfold and explode in a brilliant cast of rays?”
Dahes said, “I’d be afraid.”
Mara climbed up a bit on one of the cords. Her weight on the vast maze of lines caused the other puppets to move in bizarre patterns as she swung. She laughed, forcing herself to swing higher. The puppets spun and danced in complex patterns. She sung, “Wouldn’t it be amazing to open up the world and see what is inside? To dance in its rays and hold it in your palm? Wouldn’t it be wonderful... to be a part of it all?”
This is a redo of the very first illustration I made for my illustrated novel project. The first version was drawn in 2008. Older version here: [link]

For starters I can tell you that I see Poser models a mile away and there is nothing wrong with that, but it does effect the way I critique, so these days I have to keep an eye out for it. I use Poser as well but only to create references for me to look at when I need a certain human pose.
Pros: Good atmosphere, a lot of detail that tells a story, a decent mix of foreground, middle ground and background. I like the idea of the whole going to far in training bit.
Cons: While some elements of your figures fall into good composition, namely the live ones, the two middle dummies disrupt the compositional flow. If you are not familiar with the rule of of two thirds or the golden ratio, then I suggest you do some research on it which is a great starting place for creating good compositions. After that try getting a copy of Framed Ink which is the bible, IMO, of books on strong composition. For using the poser models I would suggest you work on the poses a little more and do paint overs on them to help tie them in better with the piece. Also, something is wrong with the warrior girl as it looks like her torso did a 180 on her waist. Lastly, the piece has way to much black in it's darkest areas. Dark doesn't mean black, have cooler darks and warm light or vice versa. The contrast would do wonders.
Hope that helps.
