Gunner Cade, Modern Warfare In Dystopia

Description

Gunner Cade was written by 'Cyril Judd', who were Judith Merril [at that time married to Fred Pohl] and Cyril M. Kornbluth . Cyril was Kornbluth and 'Judd' was Judith Merril, long time editor of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and it's annual 'Best Of' collections of which she edited at least ten. Judith herself wrote the anti Nuclear War novel 'Shadow On The Hearth' and brought literary SF and John Collier grade literary fantasy to a whole generation of avid fans during what was rightly known as the Golden Age of SF. You people care nothing about this, of course, not having known any of it before.

People thought Kornbluth wrote the 'action sequences' in the Space Merchants and Gladiator at Law, too, while Pohl was supposed to be responsible for the 'social satire' aspects. In fact I suspect one of them started and the other finished these novels. Kornbluth died tragically young and Fred Pohl was busy editing SF pulp magazines and writing his own SF.

Recently they showed The Last Mimsy [a 2007 SF film] on TV. I recognised it immediately as the film version of 'Mimsy Were The Borogoves', written by Henry Kuttner in 1943! Ah, the 'Golden Age' of SF; to which this piece also belongs. Can we look forward to another 'time travelling objects from the future' film when they finally make Cyril Kornbluth's classic, The Little Black Bag? www.gutenberg.ca/ebooks/kornbl…
