The parents are doing that because they don't want their children to see stuff that could possibly make them perverts or give them nightmares. Usually at the very young age their personality is slightly developed by things they see. You don't want them to grow up to be serial killers or porn stars. Of course they'll see it in their teen years but by that time they'll have been educated about these things so they don't go round raping people or abusing others.
