So, the tailblade's based off of Halo's energy sword in both its shape, and functionality. They both cut in a similar manner, and the same applies to Srash's paw blades. They both slice through nearly anything, and they can both phase through something without harming it if need be.
As an example, the energy sword is obviously made of electrical plasma substance, yet most of the time, it holds a solid presence. Srash's tailblade is made of liquified metal, yet it holds it's shape fairly easily. Srash's blade can be softened to allow him to slash through something without harming it to hit something else behind it. Since only the edge is stiff, he can break that edge and allow the rest of the blade to move freely. Hence the ability to change shape.
While I'm here, I might as well spout that Phazon/darkness thing.
In Metroid Prime 2, there's a material known only as having dark energy. Weapons that fire this dark energy tend to capture a creature in dark black/purple crystals and then sear them to death with some sort of caustic property. Also, Phazon seems to live harmoniously with dark creatures and landscapes, not making any attempt to corrupt it into Phazon.
So, as Phazon becomes more and more concentrated, it evolves, changing color and shape, becoming more hazardous and deadly. The hierarchy of Phazon goes Blue<Red<Black. Blue Phazon usually forms loose structures of webs and bushes, but can occasionally be found liquified. It occasionally releases bolts of lightning, and also exudes a rather thick cloud into the air, poisoning most living creatures. The liquified form can be used for fuel purposes, hence why the space pirates risk their lives to refine the stuff. It can rarely be found crystallized, but that usually means it's ready to convert to it's red form, and may already be turning purple. Blue phazon can also be made into armored plates called Phazite, the manufacturing process is unknown, as Phazite does not occur naturally. Blue Phazon in particular also seems to induce "Phazon Madness" in those who spend too much time near it, causing them to become aggressive and possessive. Phazon itself has a debatable consciousness, as reported by some of the worst cases of madness.
Red Phazon is considerably more caustic than blue, killing most creatures near instantaneously, and converting the strongest into bizarre, powerful forms. Metroids seem to be the only kind of creature that can handle Phazon from a young age, and this may be due to their energy-absorbing nature. Red Phazon release much stronger crackles of lightning than its predecessor, and it also glows much more brightly. Red Phazon also has a high chance to crystallize, often laying dormant for millions of years, waiting for something powerful to corrupt. Outside of being considerably stronger structurally, tied with diamond, Red Phazon has no other notable properties.
Black Phazon is exceedingly rare, even on it's home planet, Phaaze. Less than ten reported sightings of black Phazon are listed. Black Phazon is always found in crystal form, and is much harder than any other known substance. The force needed to break a crystal is roughly equivalent to the overall force of a hyrdrogen bomb. Black Phazon shares a similar color pallete to the dark energy crystals, black, and purple at the base. All of the crystals that have been found appeared dull, lifeless, and empty. They do not glow, nor do they crackle with energy. They are also safe to touch, and do not induce phazon madness or corruption of any kind. Theories suggest that black Phazon crystals are nothing more than the empty husks of something much more malign. They might have housed the dark entities known to the Luminoth as "Ing". Ing themselves are very fond of Phazon, and display an extremely feral culture similar to that which is reported from phazon. Phazon does not harm them, and both any creature that they possess, along with themselves, is extremely resistant to all kinds of weapon fire, excluding light. Ing also possess a similar quality of corruption, being able to convert entire planets into some dark, twisted thing. Ing possess so many parallels to Phazon, that it is hard not to find some sort of connection between them. The caustic attacks, warping and mutating other creatures, (again, Metroids handle it well) the extreme strength and durability, an insatiable desire to spread and wage war. And the atmosphere, so caustic and full of particles. Phaaze might have even been an infantile "dark" planet. This dark energy, these dark creatures, they may be an evolution of Phazon, an advanced one, with some sort of culture and hierarchy.
