Magical-moments asked me to write some tutorials for her group :iconbeyond-borders:. So I will try to create a series of small tutorials covering some basic techniques and tips for taking close-up photographs. I haven't been 'in the field' for long, but in that short while I did learn a lot by doing. Although I'm not a professional or an expert, I hope I can teach other beginners and hobbyists new tricks!

Tutorial: background

For this tutorial I will focus on backgrounds. When taking a flower or still life close-up, you want the object to be the focus of your capture. So one of the most important things you have to keep in mind is what's in the background. Other objects or a background with many different colours or patterns may distract the attention off of the object. So avoid textured walls, garden chairs, buckets, tree trunks and so on! Try to pick out background colours which complement the colour of your object, but is lighter or darker than the object. The first three pictures are examples in which there are too many distractions in the background:

The next three pictures are good examples of ideal backgrounds. It's a coincidence that three out of four are green. ;)
