Over the past 15 centuries our world has changed.  It is not a high-tech, alien-like world.  It is not a waste-land.  And it is not devoid of human life.  It IS, however, devoid of human influence.

Near the beginning of the 21st century the economy, and environment spiraled out of control.  The rich became richer while everyone else descended into poverty.  Disagrements within countries soon became civil wars, which in turn became wars between neighboring countries.  These soon became World War III.  After 23 straight years of fighting, the current world leaders fled, hid on uncharted islands, unpopulated sections of the world, hoping to avoid their responsibilites as well as the repercussions of their actions.  Only a handfull stepped down formally, a group that believed in honnor.  A new group of leaders stepped up.  They each did so voluntarily, and none of them had had any experience in politics.  These new leaders were a group of Idealists and Realists.  None of them were a day over 45.  The held their first World-Summit meeting a week after they had formally taken up their positions.  At this meeting they released live video and audio of a public statement that was broadcasted the world over.  No one knows what exactly they said, all recordings have been lost.  However, it basically stated that all wars were to be immediatly terminated.  We, as humans, were going to stop acting like the feral creatures we were portraying, and start focusing on the values that all humans hold in the highest regards.  Humans were forced to look at ourselves objectively.

The world had a new goal - put aside our differences and repair the damage our previous generations had done.

Thousands of people volunteered to live in space stations for some generations, like in the somewhat recent movie Wal-E.  While everyone else stayed to try and revialize the Earth.  By sending some into space, we created a temporary population solution, also noting that, with limited room on the stations, there couldn't be large families there.  Back on earth there was a population law passed, only to last for a decade, where there were allowed no more than four members in a family, to help get back on track.  And it did only last for 10 years, after that it was revoked.  Beginning the same year the population law was passed, we began gradually receding our influence on our planet.  Cities became far more widespread, with far less inbetween them, basically, they were farther apart.  We began to stop calling them cities, as well, instead calling them Habitats, for they weren't like cities anymore, regardless.  Many of the Habitats were contructed over the existing cities, as well as on the ruins of those destroyed in WWIII.  We recycled the materials already exixting in the abandoned cities, rather than create more while we already had what we needed.  The others were built into nature.  Canyon Cliff was the first of the nature Habitats, built in what was then known as Death Valley.  Hundreds of others were soon to follow.  All of the nature Habitats had one thing in common, that the inhabitants were to coexist with nature, not to conquer it.  Eventually, after about five centuries, people began resembling their Habitats.  Costal citizens all started having blueish eyes, those in jungles or forrests green eyes, ones that lived in or near desserts began to have blonde (sandy) hair,  and those that lived in snowy areas had pale skin and near white hair.  Some people still resembled the people who onced lived there, but many looked like their home.  One Habitat remained a city, to remind the rest of the world of how it was, to remind us that millions of these were once found the world over.  This Habitat was named City.  It was built on the ruins of Las Vegas, the once dazzling city built for gambling.

Each Habitat had one main thing that it produced, along with many smaller duties.  Citizens within each Habitat was to go to school 'til 17 years of age, at 12 they were to begin what was once known as job-shadowing, as part of their cirriculum.  Within each of the Habitats there are about a hundred main jobs; there are the jobs that go with it's main export, there are ones that deal with the interhabitat agriculture (most habitats produce 60%, give or take, of their own food), there are the more mundane ones, like electricians, mantinance workers, scouts, teachers, etc.  There are also Archivists.  Each Habitat was to have an Archive, sort of like a museum and a library mixed together, where they took care of their own personal histories as well as the world's.  Each Archive also held artifacts, be they from that Habitat or from other places.  Anyone could handle the artifacts, depending on how old they were, and everyone had the right to experiance them in person, not from behind panes of glass.  Archivists are the peple responsible for keeping the artifacts in near mint condition, they are sort of historians, archaeologists, librarians, and treasure hunters all rolled into one.  Every citizen works in rotations, you hop from job to job daily, weekly, or monthly; however, sometimes, if someone shows particular intrest, and aptitude, for a certain job, they willbe assigned to it for as long as they wish.  So, many citizens hold regular jobs as well.  Everyone is paid the same as the next, regardless of their job, and regardless as to weather or not they are part of the rotations.  Everyone is now treated equal and fairly.  Our world has become as near a utopia as is practical.  We now live in harmony with the Earth, and no longer smother it.  This is our world.

This is for my roleplay group Year:3571, and it is basically a catch-up on the last milenia and a half between now and the time period that it takes place in. If you read all the way to the bottom, then please check out my group and join if it interests you. I still don't have much up yet, but its comming.
