ETA: okay, now I'm really excited! Thanks to 2 wonderful tutorial - I'll add the links in a bit - I've come to understand something more about shading. The most important: 1. There is no black. Only greytones, AND 2. every object also reflects the colours of their surroundings.
So now I've been bold, my god I was scared stiff - and went to work with Sky Blue Light, then covered it with cool grey 1, done the edging with Cool Grey 40%. Still not happy, I finally GOT it, and used yellow in the shading, to try reflect all the gold. And when I finally got that, used Coral to reflect the red stones. And now it's no longer flat!!!!
My goodness, this understanding of shading isTHE biggest breakthrough for me ever! It's such a simple thing, BUT.. you've gotta know it first!
