There is a saying about death being "the ultimate equalizer"; it does not "discriminate, does not care what the color of your skin is." And you never see very many Ponies in Equestria descriminating anypony. AppleJack is very friendly as well as competitive, I kind of think of the Reaper in the same sense. Another interesting fact is that a Scythe was used by farmers during harvesting season back in the 16th Century in Europe and in the 1800s in the U.S. AppleJack is a country girl farmer, who takes a big part in harvesting all the apples during "Apple Buck" season.
"If you are ripe, your time is up," as the Reaper would say.
