“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”
--Thomas Jefferson

“This is just the way it is. This is what has to be done, and no one has the power to change that!”
--Alucard, Hellsing OVA III

“You’re going to wait,” Jane Smith said, blinking up at the giantess. “That’s your plan to save this nation? You’re going to wait?

The Crimson Conservative was silent for a moment, an intensity gathering in her single eye that the other woman did not like. “Yup,” the redhead told the blonde. “I’ll wait, ‘cause there’s nothing else to do.”

“You… you stupid bitch!” Smith spat. “You would sit back and wait? Watch and wait as America is destroyed?”

“I’ll watch as America’s destruction looks like it‘s really gotten goin‘, yeah,” Connie told her. She could see that Smith was understandably dumbfounded, and let her expression show that she sympathized.

Her display of sympathy only seemed to enrage the blonde further, however.

“What you’re saying is, you want things to get worse?” she asked in a growl, jabbing a finger at Connie. “And you call yourself a patriot! You want to sit around and watch while… God, there are so many horrible, unthinkable things happening to my country! You want to wait around while twenty-million foreign criminals rape, murder, and steal from American citizens…”

“And the people who try to stop them get sued by the federal government,” the redhead put in, “and the president waves his hand and just decides a million of the ‘good’ ones are suddenly allowed to live here.”

Jane Smith nodded, blonde hair waving on her shoulders from the ferocity of the motion. “You want to wait while the government shreds the Constitution…”

“And pretends to see new powers for them to have in the very document they despise.”

“While elections are stolen…” American Hero said.

“And the myth of Bush stealing the election from Gore is taken as gospel, despite Bush picking up votes in every recount.”

“While liberals trick people into believing that there’s a Klansman or Skinhead with a gun responsible for every murder…”

“When the ghettos chew-up more blacks than the Klan--all three-thousand measly members--could ever dream of.”

Smith laughed. “You want to wait while thousands of new laws are put on the books every year…”

“And none are taken off,” Connie said. “I want to wait while the people who give Americans jobs are taxed into shutting down plants and stores…”

“And are called greedy monsters by people who want to steal everything from them,” Smith added, then shook her head. “Connie, America isn’t just being steered in the wrong direction--people are trying to sink it! The greatest nation in history is sinking, and nobody cares!

“Not enough people care,” the redhead confirmed. “They don’t care ‘cause they haven’t gotten wet yet.”

American Hero’s eyes, reddened and a bit watery from the exchange, locked onto Connie’s. The gaze was held for a long moment, then Smith nodded. “Some people just won’t start bailing until they realize that they’re about to drown…”

The Crimson Conservative’s lips turned up at a corner, though for the first time that day, there was no sadism in the smile. “They won’t start trying to save themselves until they realize they’re goin’ down.”

“They won’t try to stop the people sinking America until they realize that people are trying to sink us…”

“And when that happens,” Connie said, her famous shark’s grin replacing the understanding smile, “the patriots’re gonna remember that they’ve got muscles they haven‘t used in a while, and start huckin’ folks overboard.”

Smith blinked, then looked away from her guest-turned-opponent. “Why, though? Why does it need to come to that point? Why… why are the people of the greatest nation in history allowing their country to sink at all?”

“A million reasons,” Connie told her with a shrug. “None of them good, but enough of them effective enough to work. The news tells ‘em everything’s okay. Same with teachers, politicians, and the damned brain-dead celebrities. People don’t wanna speak out ‘cause they’re afraid they’ll be called racist, homophobic, square, sexist, old-fashioned, fundamentalists… Not a lot of folks like bein’ called names, even if they’re bein’ called names by people they know for a fact are stupid at best, or evil at worst.” Smith looked up when she heard the redhead’s colossal boots coming towards her, and met the giantess’ eye. “We don’t care, though,” Connie said. “We have what it takes to weather what gets thrown at us, and we’ll be needed when the good folks of the United States wake-up and start lookin’ for leadership amid the chaos they let themselves get lumped in the middle of.”

Smith allowed a giant hand to come to rest on her shoulder, then said, “They always look for someone to lead them. A Washington or a Mao, a Reagan or a Marx, a Saint or a Hitler… they always want someone to help them out of the hard times.” Smith put her own hand on the one Connie had placed on her shoulder and squeezed it.

“An American Hero…” Connie said with a smile.

Then the grip on her hand tightened.

“Or a Soviet Superwoman,” Jane Smith said calmly, then took flight with an anguished roar. “Or a Soviet Superwoman!

The redhead saw them coming, but there were too many blows to block or avoid, and she was struck rapidly with viciously thrown strikes from fists, feet, knees, and elbows.

“A Soviet Superwoman?” Smith roared again, chopping Connie in the neck. “What if the people choose her?

I tried, Connie thought.

“What if they choose to follow the Soviet Superwoman that you let live?” the blonde cried, rising higher and sending her heel into Connie’s forehead until the Amazon’s knees buckled and she went down.

Damn it, I really tried…

“The fucking Soviet Superwoman that murdered my father! My father, the first American Hero! You let her live! You let her live after she killed my father! She killed my father!” The screams of rage and agony continued, blow after blow, each one raining down and causing the ground beneath the Crimson Conservative to creak and groan as tile cracked and wood splintered.

Yeah, I tried, Connie thought again. Maybe next time. But for now…

Suddenly the Amazon was up, a hand raised and clamped around Hero’s throat. Had it gone on longer, the speed at which the flying blonde was unexpectedly sent towards the floor would have nauseated her, but in a flash Connie had put her on the ground… then through it.

The American Hero fell into the basement of her home, ridden to the cold concrete below by the Crimson Conservative. Earth-shaking impacts of giant fists followed, interspersed with smaller blows from fists that were not so large or powerful. The smaller blows weakened and became less frequent, while the pile driver-like impacts remained. Then there were no more smaller blows from the smaller fists, and the giant impacts became regular, making the ground vibrate every second for what was a mercifully short period.

Silence. Then the limp, bloodied form of Jane Smith was flung out of the hole in the floor and into the open air of the large room. The woman crumpled to the ground, landing flat on her back and staying where she landed.

Guh,” the blonde said, the sound coming from lips that were swollen and split. “Uhh…”

One hand, clad in a fingerless crimson glove, gripped the edge of the ragged hole. Then another hand, this one soaked in blood, joined the first, and the Crimson Conservative pulled herself up out of the basement. She staggered a bit, but was able to get her legs beneath her after a moment, and stood looking down at her opponent while she caught her breath.

“Not bad,” Connie said. “Not bad at all… I just wish you could think as good as ya fight.” During the battle some of her hair had come loose from her ponytail, and as she spoke, Connie had to comb the locks behind her ear with the hand that was relatively clean of her enemy’s blood. “Now, where’s my gun…”

Though her ears were ringing, world spinning, and vision not doubled, but tripled, the words reached American Hero as she lay groaning on the floor, and she made sense of them. No, she thought. Not like this… I can’t die, not at the hands of an American. Not while Olga Yezhov still breathes… Daddy… Daddy, I’m so sorry…

She opened the eye that was not swollen completely shut when she heard her enemy’s boots clunk heavily next to her head. Don‘t let me die like this, she thought. God, not like this. God… Daddy… so sorry… Her bleary eye saw the giantess standing above her, enormous gun in hand, her expression grim.

“You said I wanted America to be destroyed,” the Crimson Conservative said, holstering her revolver. “That was a damned fool thing to say, and I think you know it. I think you also know that parts of this country--the sick, diseased parts--are going to be destroyed if the whole is gonna survive, and there’s not a thing that can be done about it. Whether they should or shouldn’t be destroyed ain’t the point, and it ain’t up to you ‘n me to save those parts when the time comes. America is going to cleans itself, with or without us.. and it’ll be a cleansing through fire.”

Connie kneeled, bringing her face to within a foot of Smith’s. “America’s gotten to the point that parts of it will burn. Whether we want it to or not, parts of it will be gotten rid of, and I think you know that as well as I do. You’re the same way, Smith; parts of you are sick, and need to be burned away so somethin’ better can take their place.

“Bad times are coming for the nation you and I love. The only question is, will Jane Smith let parts of herself burn away so American Hero will be there when we need her?”

The Crimson Conservative rose and walked off, and Smith closed her unbruised eye, telling herself the hitches in her chest were due to some physical wounds, and nothing more.

She heard the front door of her mansion close behind the other woman as she left, the noise signaling that she was now alone. Then, for whatever reason, the hitching grew worse, and the tears came.
