Every week, we collect and feature the outstanding submissions to our gallery. If you're looking for quality literature to read, start here!

Each item is hand-picked by our admins and presented with a small introduction (we think this makes browsing literature easier). We don't seek perfection: we just choose interesting work and share it for critique, appreciation and encouragement.

Welcome to another Weekly Round-up! We've got quite a sombre collection of literature for you this week: with burials, scars, and driftwood. We've also got a fantastic archive piece about a young runaway - highly recommended!

As the spectre of halloween approaches, we'll be on the lookout for some spooky works to be featured in our Round-up on Monday 29th October. If you've written or read anything that you think might be suitable, please let us know

This Week's Highlights!

Oceane, Adrift by Lacewinged-Beauty

Be swept away by the ocean in this beautiful poem.

This is simply gorgeous poetry - sad, imaginative and boasting a wonderful ebb-and-flow of a rhythm. It almost invokes a feeling of sea-sickness, so strong is the sense of gentle motion.

Call Me Cicatrice by intricately-ordinary

"Scars are ghosts of people you've left behind. They aren't always visible but they never go away"

The first kiss is something that's often wildly romanticised in literature. Here's an antidote to that which paints the first kiss as a scar which never quite heals. It's a creative and bold character study, teasing across that line between poetry and prose.

The Price of Dying by Clevina

Before Mr Peters died, he bequeathed just one wish to his children: to be buried once his time was over. But the cemeteries are full, the ground-space limited, and graveyards are competetive places.

This short story treads a line between being respectful but unsympathetic; polite but unromantic. The narrative unfolds cleanly and easily, telling a story rich in little ironies and quiet travesties.

From the Archive

We love our old deviations just as much as our new ones. From time to time, we like pull out an old gem that's been lost in the depths of our gallery and feature it in this space.

Runaway by LiliWrites

Sal's a teenager wandering the lonely highway with just a few spare clothes and some peanut butter sandwiches, desperate get out of Washington. When Betty Reed pulls up to offer him a ride, he soon discovers just how much he needed a friend.

From Betty, an old runaway of the Anti-Nam movement, to Sal, a modern thespian with an already tragic life, LiliWrites has crafted a pair of characters you won't soon forget. This is a fine story of hardship, revival, and compassion. Don't be put off by the length: this is an engrossing one which is well worth the time.
