The Arrangement

The woman steps out onto the earth of the new country
A life already of wear and tear, but seeking a beginning
To find a soulmate, a passionate love, her only desire
Now an organized meeting, arranged opportunity made

A man chosen presents himself, his perchance to hope
She turns aside, unable to countenance the connection
Dreams so held, but another steps from the shadows
Tender words shared, her heart melts, cares forgotten

Their desire for each other, to love, to have and to hold
Then intrusions, interventions, and interference befall
Rupture, a breach forced upon them drives them apart
So in this moment her heart breaks, once again forsaken

Then she gathers herself, to fight for her new found love
And throwing off the shackles that hold, against her will
Reaches out to the one she loves, has discovered so late
Gathers him to herself yet again, to give of everything

Fear and doubt cast aside, her heart, her soul, for him
But the golden thread binding had slipped from reach
He turns slowly away, she weeping, says, "I set you free
And if you return, you're truly mine, it's meant to be."

Heart breaking, yet again, she releases her beautiful bird
So he soared, wishing to hold close that breaking heart
But he wearied of the flight, strength faded, grip failing
While below the cruel, black rocks of despair beckoned.
