So you think Geology is easy?

Geology isn't easy. Rocks do some pretty ridiculous things.

This comic pokes fun at my Structural Geology class, the most difficult geology class I've ever taken. It was a challenging, time consuming and highly informational class. We had to make countless stereonets, cross sections, geologic histories and seismic reflections. This class made me feel like failure. It made me cry. It gave me nightmares. But I survived(barely) to tell the tale in the form of this comic. Enjoy!

Geology explanations(those silly sciences and their science-y words!):

Stereonet: A method of representing planes on a 2-D surface. Planes can be represented by a curve or by a dot(which is the shorthand version). This is commonly used by geologists to plot bedding plane measurements.

Seismic Reflection: A method of mapping rocks deep beneath us by sending strong vibrations down into the earth and measuring them when they bounce off the rock layers and come up to the surface. This creates an image of the rock layers deep (1-5km) beneath us. These seismic reflections look more like squiggly lines than rock layers and are very difficult to interpret.

Crossection: Using info already available, Geologists draw a 'slice' into the earth showing all the rock layers. It's similar to cutting into a layered cake and seeing the layers inside.

Geologic History: Geologic histories get really complicated really fast. Rocks can be folded, broken, melted, refolded and many more! Interference folds. Google it.
