Description

Today here in England is Remembrance Sunday. The day we remember those that fell at the two World Wars. Nowadays we also remember our Heroes of later wars as well.
The poppy symbolises the fields in Flanders were so many soldiers died in World War 1.
We found loads of poppies growing at the roadside when we were out one Sunday.I thought this one was very fitting for today as it shows the centre 'cross' quite clearly.

Wear your poppy with pride and remember....

For The Fallen
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.
But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night.
As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

This was written for the soldiers of the World Wars but it now stands for so many soldiers that have given their lives in the name of peace.

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood and faced God which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass.
'Step forward now you soldier. How shall I deal with you ?
Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?'
The soldier squared his shoulders and said 'No, Lord, I guess I ain't because those of us who carry guns can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays and at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent because the world is awfully rough.
But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here Lord, it needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much but if you don't, I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
'Step forward now you soldier. You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets.
You've done your time in Hell.'
