Background

Miriam "Sniperbadger" Flippo is in hiding. The Hebbleskin Gang has murdered her parents, her boyfriend, and several of her classmates from Gerosha High. They've helped the new Jihadist regime running "Ameristan" to build a force shield around the border with Netheel and Ameristan, turning her home state of Indiana into a prison colony. Shariah fanatics have taken to the streets, rounding up "dhimmies" and throwing them in concentration camps.

As she used her skills to hack the mainframe, she gave several pilgrims to Toklisana a 48-hour opportunity to flee Ameristan and start their lives over. However, she was originally going to flee with her boyfriend Phil Couric. Alas, Phil wound up being murdered by Hebbleskin gangsters during the exodus.

Given these horrors, Miriam took up an offer by a friend of hers she makes along the way into the passageway in Netheel. She decides to head to Chimerica instead of Toklisana. However, the colony of Chimerica, now ruled by China, decides that she could be a liability anywhere on the North American continent. So for the time being, Miriam agrees to enter witness protection.

She adopts the nickname "Hǎishuǐ," roughly the Chinese equivalent of what her real name means in Hebrew, and goes into hiding in Hong Kong. She continues to work as a hacker, learning Chinese and improving her skills. However, she hides in plain sight.

"Haishui" gains fake glasses, and stores her traditional clothing some place safe. She vows to herself that one day, she will get to be Miriam again. She abandons the baseball cap, opting for a hat more in keeping with what she believes someone Chinese might wear. She also ditches her khakis, learning to like skirts.

Her new life is very lonely at first...until she meets another once-American exile living in Hong Kong; named Steve McLaine...
