Spotlight of the Week

Holly by brandrificus
Daily Deviation winner, by :iconbrandrificus:
Since it's almost Christmas, I decided to check out some of the Christmas deviations and this one immediately caught my eye. I love fantasy and this piece is so dreamy, it makes me wish Christmas were here right now!
The images are all well-balanced and the proximity is perfect. I especially love the sparkles and all the glittery effects around the fairy's face. The reflective sheen on the hollies was a good idea, too. My favourite has to be the wings, they were integrated beautifully into the picture and the opacity is just enough to give the sense of fragility without betraying the photo-editing effects.

Cute Baby Dragon Shaded by Mayzart
This is a piece by :iconmayzart:
Isn't he just adorable? The shading on the neck makes the dragon appear more 3D, and I just love the shadows cast upon its body by the tail and the horn. Despite the rough exterior hinted at by the grey tones, he looks so cuddly, possibly due to the graininess of the picture. My only problem is that the neck appears a little too thin in comparison to the head and the body and it makes him look kind of stick-like. But that's just me.

This was a drawing from one of my "I'll slam your artwork if I don't like it" forum posts. This piece really stands out - I can definitely see the anguish in the picture. Although I would've thought the emotions evoked are more akin to abject terror: what with the down-turned mouth, wide eyes and the fingers clawing at the face (whether in frustration or fear?). The more minor details, such as the shading in the hair, particularly the fringe, and the shadows in the gouges of the face gives a sense of movement and realism. The bird and star tattoos intrigue me as well, and I'd be interested to know the purpose of them.

Thanks for the lovely feature! :aww: Yeah, I drew her more in a fearful fashion than anguish, but I tried to think how one leads to the other. Sometimes anguish can be so bad that we go mad, and hands covering the face seemed to represent this emotion in quite a lot of pictures I've seen, so I took it a step further. As for the hand tattoos, it is just another sense of personality. There really isn't much meaning to them in this picture other than trying to make the person feel more like a 'person with a life, choices to get tattoos, etc' versus just a drawing of a girl. :)
