Sorry for lack of updates folks. Cosplay off season - not much happening.
So I went to Arma '12 as a childhood favourite, Rufio from Hook. I must say it is my favourite cosplay now. I have not enjoyed making and wearing a cosplay as much as this one: comfortable (yaaaaay), not a lot of makeup time, popular but not buried in photographers, visually impressive (dat hair) very nearly screen accurate (90%) really cheap for a cosplay, most things easy to put together, learnt a lot of new things, and so so much fun to run around in.
I have to thank the friends who encouraged me on to make this thing, the whole thing began around March while working on the Lord of the Rings, and Kitch told me I looked like Dante Basco. Then all my friends said there was a striking resemblance and it had to be done. Well it kind of became an obsession from there
Had to get a couple of groups out of the way first, and then it was between July and October that it came together. And all my love for ~Dispozition who helped put some things together in the end and also putting my hair up. Oh and for putting up with my crazy XD
As expected, I was sick to death of people chanting "Rufioooooo" at me towards the end XD

This is a long one! I have no idea who would read this, maybe someone else attempting it, but anyway...
The more I looked at this seemingly simple outfit the more minute detail I found. There are so many small items. I tried my best to replicate all of it. ALL OF IT.
Jacket: I found a $5 pleather jacket at a thrift store. Yay! It needed heavy modding- I cut off the sleeves, shortened the whole thing to waist length, sewed the collar down. I added panels of a synthetic matte material to the front and back. I sewed the individual lines on the shoulders and down the back. Strips of black vinyl and red cotton were sewn to the shoulders. Each of those tassels was hand beaded (so many beads). The beads were a combination of bought and made from sculpey.
The shirt was one I had lying around which needed minor modding (ie destroy it with scissors)
Breechcloths: vinyl cut into strips and beaded individually (so many beads!)
Pants: $10 black skinnies again from a thrift store (in retrospect they were worth over $80, whoops). The rips are in the same positions as the real thing XD. Unfortunately there were no pale threads in the denim so we didn't get the paler frayed material, but it was close enough. Dispozition spent hours fraying the rips with sandpaper >,> thankyouuu. Red tights came from a sock shop, I think I might have cut them too short. Shoe were actually the most expensive thing but thank goodness I found them! The quest for the right shoes was driving me nuts, until I found them at a sale Belt came from a thrift store.
Accesories: hokay! Where do I start?? There were so many. Let's go top to bottom.
Earring: screen accurate with a tiny personal touch. Made up of twine, feathers and beads. Had to make two of the beads from sculpey (SO MANY BEADS).
Necklaces: The fang necklace I chose to personalise, but will probably redo it later. I went with real bone colour and texture instead of the movie's plastic looking things. They were sculpey over foil, baked, painted and tied onto a leather cord. Nine of them. He also has a tea strainer on a leather cord with a feather and coin.
Belt holder: there is a bone speared through his belt, again sculpey on foil.
Cuffs: leather cuffs came from a local hippy shop. I had to cut off the press studs and add eyelets so that they tied like a corset. The spikes were a challenge - ended up making them from epoxy clay. There are golden shark teeth (sculpey) on a cord on his right hand.
Ring: modelled on a cervical vertebra, made from sculpey on foil (I like the stuff ok?). Actually had a real duck vertebrae to look at - don't ask.
Sword: had to give up, ran out of time, but I did find one at the con that worked really well.
Did I mention the beads?
Hair: so glad we'd learnt from making CATS outfits. They were three strips of tuille, onto which we hot glued crepe hair. They stayed on my head.. glued into place with gel and spirit gum
I wanted to add a note that I had originally cut and dyed my real hair for this. It turned out that it was simpler to do it this way. So yes, I have boy hair now.
A few notes on crossplay. This was my first official crossplay since I became a cosplayer. I did my best, there were a few things I did to help trick the eye. Firstly, Asian society as a broad generalisation have this obsession with women being being flawlessly white, in the same way western society seems to favour a tanned complexion. So I tried to tan up naturally, then used a foundation a couple shades darker than my own, and made sure it was uneven. A bit of stage dirt completed the look. A more neutral lip colour also helped. I let my eyebrows grow out for this one - so I had bushy things instead of my usual arches.
I do have a chest binder to flatten my chest but gave it a miss this con, wanted to be comfortable and also the cut of the jacket hid my chest pretty well. The jacket also hid the outline of my waist and hips.
The breechcloths helped hide the shape of my thighs. The belt deliberately sits higher than the pants to extend the length of my legs and also hid the curve of my hips.
I eventually found that if I had gave myself a slight underbite and my face tilted up at the cameras it gave me more of a square jawline. Unfortunately in losing weight so the world wouldn't be subject to my belly, I also got a bit of a sharper face. When I was heavier I could see the resemblance in myself.
Lastly, the poses. I actually struggled a lot with girly cosplays last year because I have a really wide based stance and stride. So it was refreshing to be standing relaxed and have it work. Squaring my arms in this outfit also made my shoulders look broader under the tassels.
It scares me how much I do look like my brothers >.<
