______ looked at the man in front of her without fear. The man was about fifty years old or maybe even more, but he didn’t look older than thirty. His brown hair hadn’t started to bleach yet. He was too good-looking to be there.

Old man’s impressive amber eyes went on examining the girl carefully. She was very young – even younger than his grandson. Her (hair color) hair was a bit messy, probably because she was brought there by force. She looked tired and bored, but her (eye color) eyes were watching him with a perfect concentration, as if she were waiting for him to do a tiny move and kill her.

He didn’t.

Instead, he waved his hand and one of the men in the room immediately walked towards him. “Bring me a glass of red wine,” he said, then cast a glance at the girl. “Bring something for our guest, too.”

The girl shook her head. “I’m fine.” Her voice didn’t sound like she was scared, much to old man’s surprise. She was here, at the top floor of the building, in the middle of men with every kind of guns and probably about to die. How come she wasn’t afraid?

The man left the room to bring the wine. Meanwhile, old man was still studying the girl. She was sitting still and waiting for something to be said. At last, she really got bored of it. “What’s going to happen to me?”

The old man smiled slightly. She looked like his grandson now; impatient and angry. “I’m thinking.”

“At least you could tell me your name.”

“Why?” the old man asked.

“Then I’d have something to think about.”

“You think names are important to know someone?” he asked. Again, the girl shook her head. “No, they’re only meant for sounding nice. That’s why I want to know – I wonder if it sounds nice or suits you.”

Old man smiled once again. She didn’t hesitate to answer and her reply was good too. She was clever – seven points. But not enough, not yet.

“Do you think your name suits you?” he asked, ignoring her question.

“You tell me.”

She was brave. Brave enough to speak to him like this. Seven points. One more thing to see.

“I hope it does – you’re promising.”

“I don’t know if that’s a good thing.”

She was grumpy, too. At least that was making sense.

Old man thought it was enough. “Call Antonio over.”

They didn’t wait too long. A man in a dark brown suit showed up. He had a tanned skin and glittering green eyes. He didn’t look like he belongedto this place, either. “Yes, Master?” he said with a smile.

“I wanted to ask your idea about this girl.” Old man pointed at her. “What do you say?”

Antonio turned to look at her. It didn’t take him long to speak. “She seems possible. Where did you find her?”

“You know I’m not deaf, don’t you?” the girl reminded crossly. She didn’t like them talking about her as if she was a puppy.

Antonio’s smile grew wider. “I know, dear.” Suddenly his smile turned into a cold one. “But I was not asking you.”

Old man chuckled. “She was in the middle of our…” he tried to find a good word.

“Your business?” she suggested.

He nodded. “Yes. She was in the middle of our ‘business’ and we told her to go away. However, she didn’t listen – and she’s here now, because she’s seen too much and she’s too stubborn to shut up.”

“Well, you really expect me to? I’ve seen a bloody real mafia fight there and-” A gun aimed at her neck stopped her for a moment, but she kept talking. “-now I’m in your place, to be shot any damn second. How am I supposed to shut up?”

Oh, she resembled his grandson too much. Maybe he would know what to do, but he wasn’t interested in trying newbies to see if they’re good enough to join them. Instead, he would go and shoot people and swear.

Old man decided to keep her for a while. “Take her to our guest room.”

Antonio nodded. “Understood.” He grabbed the girl by her arm and started dragging her out of the room.

“Hey! Wait! Old man, let me speak, damn it!”

Old man smiled. She would be a good one.

The girl started counting the tiles once more. She had been in this ‘guest room’ for at least five hours now, and she was alone. She had started to get hungry, too.

She stopped counting and stood up, then walked up to the door. She punched it with all her strength. “Let me out!”

She had to keep shouting for a few minutes before she heard footsteps. Two men were walking towards her little prison. “Silence, girl,” someone said. That was Antonio. He carefully unlocked the door and the girl rushed out, starting to yell again.

“What the hell are you thinking, keeping me here? At least give me something to eat!”

“Hush now,” he said impatiently. “We’re going to see if you deserve to live.”

“What?!” she screamed.

The man who was standing next to Antonio put a hand on his shoulder. “Let me take this one, Toni,” he said. He looked very calm and polite. ‘Toni’ stepped back rapidly. “Yes, sir.”

This man was about twenty and his auburn hair looked like silk. His brown eyes were soft. “My name is Feliciano,” he said. “And I’m sorry for this trouble, but we’ll end this as soon as possible, um…”

“_______,” the girl said, without anger in her voice this time.

“_______,” Feliciano repeated. “We’re going to the shooting range to see if you’re good enough to stay around. If you are, you’ll have a nicer room here.”

“And if I’m not?” she asked.

“…we will decide it later. Now, we should see if you have any skills to defend yourself and fight. Let’s not make it difficult, okay? For both of us.”

At least he didn’t speak like she was a street dog or something. _______ nodded.

Feliciano took her to the said shooting range, Antonio walking right behind them. Of course they wanted to keep an eye on her. She didn’t object and went along.

When they got into the big room, _______ looked around. She had never seen a shooting range before, but now she could see the best one. Next to the door were a long table and several cabinets. Every kind of gun was on that table.

“Pick anyone you like,” Feliciano said.

_______ took a look at every gun carefully, than touched one. “Can I take this one?”

“Sure. Now, come here.”

Feliciano made sure she was standing on the right point and started to tell her how to shoot, but _______ interrupted him. “I can do this.”

Antonio was annoyed, but Feliciano wasn’t. He looked like he was amused. “If you say so.”

_______ stood straight, then checked if everything was okay with the gun. Next, surprising Feliciano, she walked over another lane. The bullseye was further from her now. She aimed at the red point in the middle of it, then shot. Antonio looked for the bullet with binoculars. His mouth dropped open.

Feliciano burst into laughter. The girl turned to see him, she was smiling widely now. “Is it enough, or would you like me to do a better one?”

Feliciano was shaking his head with disbelief and fun. “My brother would love to see this face of him.” He pointed at Antonio.

“Yes, he would.” The three turned to see the old man, who was also amused. “Luckily, I was here to see it! Why didn’t you tell that you knew how to use a gun?”

“You would shoot me before I could shoot you.”

Feliciano laughed again. He knew what his grandfather was thinking now. Six points and tick.

“Antonio, do you have any objections?” he asked. Antonio shook his head. “I agree what you agree.”

“Well then _______, would you like to be a part of my family and see how bloody real mafia things work?”

“You don’t need to ask twice,” she said, smiling mischievously this time. “On one condition.”

“What is it?” Feliciano asked impatiently.

“Do I get to see your brother?”

“Definitely,” he smirked. “Actually, I lied a few minutes ago. He has been watching us via the cameras. I think he’s coming here right now…”

The door opened, revealing a young man. He had the same hair type as Feliciano’s, but this man’s hair was darker and his amber eyes looked just like the old man’s. He was in a black suit just like the old man, and had an unreadable expression on his face.

He walked towards the four. “I thought you didn’t like girls in mafia, grandpa.”

“I don’t like useless girls in mafia,” he corrected. “This girl seems useful… in many ways.”

Feliciano smirked. “Grandpa, don’t embarrass us in front of her!”

“Grandpa?” she repeated. “You’re his grandsons?”

“Got a problem with that?” the other grandson asked a bit crossly.

_______ looked at him. “Look, I don’t want to start a fight in my first hour. Let’s not kill each other for a week, okay? If I’m that bad, you can kick me out then. Deal?”

“Lovino, don’t,” Feliciano said, seeing the look in his brother’s eyes, because he knew what was coming.

Lovino smiled in a devilish way. “Deal. But if you’re not good for anything here, girl… you better kill yourself before I do.” He walked out of the room.

“Sorry,” Feliciano apologized. But _______ didn’t look like she was angry, or scared. Her eyes were saying a whole different thing: Challenge accepted.

“Well then… let’s see if I’m good for anything.”
I've been thinking of writing a mafia story featuring Romano, even if he doesn't appear much here. I'm thinking of making this a long story, if I can, and I'll try my luck in a contest too.

Edit: I am making this a long story. Second and third chapters are ready now and I'll go on.

Hetalia and its characters belong to Hidekaz Himaruya.
