Ms. Kirkland  took out  her wand,
”See? But that’s not all. It‘s a long way into town. It would be a shame to have to walk that far”
She waved it toward her cat, and in a sparkling haze, it transformed into a horse. Then she asked for (Name’s) basket, transforming that into a carriage. It wasn’t anything too fancy.

Ms. Kirkland looked back at (Name), who had a look of disbelief on her face.
“Sorry dear, I had to work with what I had. You‘ll get your things back as soon as we get to town”
(Name) followed Ms. Kirkland into the carriage, pinching herself once to see if she was dreaming.
The horse neighed as the carriage started to move.
Ms. Kirkland pulled out her wand once more, and made herself a cup of tea.(Name) watched as she did so.

“Would you like some?” She asked with a hum in her voice.
(Name) looked away,”Oh, um, no thank you.” She looked at the farmland passing outside the window. She had mixed feelings of excitement, uncertainty, fear, and thankfulness.

“Well, I’ll go ahead and explain a few things, (Name), as overwhelming as this may seem.” Ms. Kirkland said with a chuckle.

“A fairy godmother ,like myself, is responsible for a person like you. For it is those with a life like yours are destined to have a much happier life later on. Of course, that is only if they have the will to continue on, and get a little push to keep them going. You did have the will to go on, despite how bad things were. You’ve come out here to make you’re dreams come true, yes?”

(Name) responded with a nod.

“Good. It is my job to help you go along this path. You have done very well so far, if I do say so myself.” She took a sip of her tea.

(Name) started to feel a little more relaxed. A stir of questions were still in her head.

“If you don’t mind, tell me about you’re dreams, darling.” Ms. Kirkland said.

(Name) pondered for a moment. She never spoke about her dreams to anyone, except that one day when she told her step sisters, Sally and Lucy. They just laughed in her face, telling (Name) that she would be doing nothing but chores for the rest of her life.
(Name) began to feel tears in her eyes as sadness came over her.

“I’m sorry…I just can’t.” she turned away.

Ms. Kirkland saw how sad she was, and asked softly, “Why not, dear?”

(Name) was silent for a moment,” because…they are nothing more but dreams…stupid dreams…you‘ll just laugh at them, too.” A tear trickled down her face.

‘You cry too much’,(Name) remembered hearing Sally say.
‘Nobody is going to want to be with a crybaby.’ She remembered Lucy, and even her step mother, laughing along.

“Why would I ever do such a thing?” Ms. Kirkland asked. She took (Name) into a comforting embrace. (Name) wiped away a few tears, “I’m sorry…”

“No, no don’t be. I know, it’s been hard.” Ms. Kirkland said.

After a few moments, (Name) began to speak.

“My dreams…promise you won’t laugh?” Her voice was quiet.

Ms. Kirkland nodded,”I promise, dear, I would never.”

(Name) began, “ I want to have friends. I know it might sound silly, but I never had any ever since my step family had moved in. I was very young then. I also want to have a wonderful life of my own. I want to travel and explore all the wonderful places in this world. I’ve been stuck inside my house for so long. And maybe one day…fall in love.”

Ms. Kirkland smiled, “Why those are all wonderful dreams,(Name)! Now I just want you to remember something. Your dreams are very important. There might be times when people will have negative things to say about them. Don’t ever listen to them. You must have it in your heart to believe in them, no matter what, believe. Then one day, they will come true.”

(Name) felt a weight lift off her. She felt happier.

The carriage stopped. They had made it to the town entrance.

“ Just remember to keep going (Name). I will be here to help you. You’re a strong girl, and I believe in you.” Ms. Kirkland said.

The two stepped out of the carriage. Ms. Kirkland waved her wand, transforming the horse back to a cat, and the carriage back to (Name’s) basket.

“I must go now, (Name).” Ms. Kirkland said,”Do you feel okay enough to continue on your own?”

(Name) nodded, “ Yes, I’ll be fine Ms. Kirkland. Thank you, but will I ever see you again?”

Ms. Kirkland pulled over her hood onto her head, “Of course you will. I will return every time you need to most help.”

And with the breeze of the wind, she was gone.

(Name) smiled to herself. She felt more confident, and believed.

As she made her way in town, she saw the people going on with their lives. There were people talking, children playing and dogs barking. The town‘s buildings, shops, trees, and houses were decorated with lights and ribbons.
There was a poor man on a street corner singing and playing a tune on his accordion. There was the smell of food in the air, but (Name) couldn’t tell what it was.

‘So this is what it’s like,’ she thought to herself.
A few people greeted her as they passed by on a sleigh with horses. The sleigh had bells, and seemed to go in tune with the accordion.  (Name) shyly replied back. Everyone here seemed really nice, and in a happy mood.

As (Name) walked by a few shops, one of them caught her eye. It was a dress shop. (Name) walked to the shop window .The dresses looked so beautiful.

They were dresses that only a princess would wear. They had to be. (Name) had never seen so many pretty dresses in her whole life. She had always worn old dresses that had to be patched up every time a tear would appear.

Then there was the one dress. It was the one she had seen in her dreams. Her eyes sparkled as she imagined herself in it. She began to imagine herself in it, and began to dance around, earning confused looks from the people around her.

As (Name) twirled and hummed to herself, she tripped over something and landed on a small food stand of fruits and vegetables.

“Hey!” (Name) heard a man’s voice say.

She looked up to see him standing over her, arms crossed.(Name) assumed he was the owner of the food stand  There was a sound of laughter as he helped her up.

“You’re going to have to pay for all of this.”

(Name) smiled nervously,”I-I’m sorry, but I don’t have any money.”

The man handed her a broom, “Then you’ll have to work.”
(Name) sighed, and began to clean up the mess.

“Finally,” she said to herself.

(Name) walked up to the man, who seemed to be sleeping, and snoring loudly. It was late noon now, and the sun was high in the sky.

“Excuse me sir,” she poked at him with the broom,”I’m finished cleaning up.”

The man woke up and observed her work. It was the cleanest he had ever seen.

“Wow, how did you get it to look so…new?”

(Name) shrugged, “I don’t know, sir, I just did my job, that’s all.”

The man nodded and took the broom back,”You’re free to go.”

(Name) took the apple out of her basket and began to eat it. She was sitting by herself , watching as everyone else around her had someone to talk to. She saw two girls about her age talking and laughing across the street from her. They were hanging up decorations.

One of the girls had on a white coat and a white fur hat. She had long, wavy amber colored hair. The other girl had light straight brunette hair that went a little past her shoulders. She was wearing a darker colored coat.

(Name) looked down at the ground. They seemed so nice, but why would she even want to try to be friends with them? They already had each other…

She took out her journal from her basket, and began to doodle. She drew a snowman. It was frowning, and a whole in the middle of it’s chest in a shape of a heart. Then she drew a teardrop coming from one of it’s eyes.

‘Who am I kidding,’ she thought to herself,’a snowman can’t cry.

(Name) jumped as she felt someone tap her shoulder. It was one of the girls from across the street.

“Hello, my friend and I were wondering if you would like to help us-”
She stopped as she looked at (Name’s) drawing.

‘Oh no,’ (Name) thought to herself,’They must think I’m weird now...

“Oh, I like your drawing.” she said, her voice softening, ”Can I see it?”

“Um, sure,” (Name) said, tearing out the piece of paper and handing it to her.

The girl showed  her friend, who said she liked it too.

“My name is Yuliya.” said the girl. She was the one with the white coat.
“And this is my friend, Kristina,” she motioned to the girl next to her, who waved at (Name).

“I’m (Name)," (Name) said.

“Nice to meet you.” said Yuliya. “ You’re not from here, are you?” she said.

(Name) shook her head,”I came here for…um…”

“The Winter Festival!” Kristina finished for her,”That’s why, right?”

“Um, yes, yes, that’s it.” (Name) said.

“Great, then maybe you can help us with the decorations?” Yuliya asked,” I’m sure we can be great friends.”

“Sally! Lucy! Come down here right this instant!”

(Name’s) stepmother yelled. She had the letter (Name) had left behind. Anger rushed through her veins.

“Coming, mother!” The two step sisters said simultaneously. They nearly tripped over each other as they pushed down the stairs.

“What is it?” Sally asked anxiously. Lucy punched her arm,
”Hey, I was going to ask first!”
Step mother slammed down the letter on the table in front of her.

“Silence!”

The two sisters froze in place.

Step mother began to walk slowly around the table. “(Name) has ran away. According to this letter she left behind.” She crumpled it into a ball and threw it on the ground.

Lucy and Sally glanced at each other, then back to the paper on the ground.

“No way,” Lucy said, ”She’s in so much trouble!”

“She‘s so stupid,” Sally began, “ (Name) can’t ever survive out there on her own! She’s a insecure little crybaby, she’ll get herself kidnapped or something.”

“I doubt it. She’s too ugly for that, who would even think of kidnapping (Name). I bet she’s starving right now.”
Step mother growled, “Enough! You two will help me find her, like it or not.”

“But mother,” Sally whined,”Why should we waste our time finding (Name)? She could be anywhere!”

Lucy agreed, “ I haven’t even done my hair yet!”

Step mother sighed in frustration, “Well, would you rather be doing the chores around here?”

The two shook their heads.

“Then hurry up and get ready. Once we find her, she’ll be doing the housework for the rest of her life.”
