Chapter 3

“Satou, you’re back!” I exclaimed as I walked into my house. Satou is my older brother and ever since our parents died and we moved out of our foster home, he has been the one to take care of me. “Ame~!” He said cheerfully and promptly scooped me up in his arms. “I’m so glad you’re visiting,” I said, looking up at him with a smile. Due to his job, he was frequently out of the house and didn’t come back for long periods of time. He would visit me occasionally, for a varied amount of time. Every time he came back, I would be elated. But this time, I had mixed emotions. The way Ren was, they would surely find out about each other. It was ok if Ren knew about Satou, but if Satou knew about the way Ren behaved around me, he would certainly become upset. Playing the role of both a mom and a dad made him a bit overprotective.
“How’s school?” He asked me, “I heard you got into your choice college,” he said, grinning. “School is going fine,” I responded, grinning back, “I took a tour of the college, too. The campus and dorms were really nice,” I had gone a few weeks ago to the campus and sent a detailed e-mail about it to Satou as soon as I got back home. “I’m so proud of you,” he said, hugging me again. I breathed in the scent of his sweater, a mix of laundry detergent and light cologne. “So how is your relationship going with Emma?” I asked him as we parted. At the mention of his girlfriend, he turned a strange shade of red. “Er… Let’s just say things aren’t going so well,” he said hesitantly. “Aw, that’s ok, Satou. Did the two of you get into a fight?” I asked. He rarely ever fought with Emma, or even complained about her. So seeing a troubled look on his face after mentioning her meant something was wrong. “Sort of,” he said, looking away. “Don’t worry. Once you get back, she’ll realize how much she missed you and she won’t be mad at you anymore,” I said, trying to comfort him even though I didn’t really like her. Emma and I…Weren’t exactly fond of each other. She treated me as if I was still in pre-k and always hogged Satou’s attention. I suppose you could say I was jealous, but for some reason I always felt like she did it on purpose, to show her ownership over him or something. Honestly, I couldn’t even guess why he chose to go out with her. But if it made him happy to be with her, so be it.
“W-well, you see, we kind of broke up,” he said, biting his lip. This really shocked me. “What? Why?” I questioned, curious and confused. “I-I don’t really want to talk about it,” he said. Normally, I would pester him until he told me, but I could see he was extremely upset, so I decided not to bother him. However, it still upset me to see him so troubled. Satou had a bad habit of keeping his feelings to himself, so I didn’t want him to just bunch it all up inside. I decided to question him later, when he was calmer. “Anyway, let’s not talk about these things,” he said, faking a cheerful tone, “I can’t wait to take a bath with you, like we used to as kids~,” My face burning, I turned to him. “S-Satou! That’s so embarrassing! B-besides, that was when we were younger!” I said, looking down at the ground. “Oh, come on!” He said, wrapping his arms around me from behind, “I was looking forward to bathing with you,” I sighed and brushed away his arms. “Fine, you weirdo,” I said, “but I’m keeping my boxers on,” I said as I walked away, trying to hide my embarrassment.
“A bubble bath? Seriously?” I said as I climbed into the bathtub. In a way, I was glad, since I couldn’t see him through the white foam and I was very uncomfortable with nudity (even though he is my brother). “It used to be so much fun taking bubble baths as kids. I remember we would stay in there for hours until Christina yelled at us to get out,” Satoru said, chuckling. I giggled along, reminiscing over our childhood in our foster home with Christina, our guardian. In a while, I forgot that we were in the bath until the water started turning cold. “How long have we been in here again?” I said, looking at the translucent, thin suds. “I guess we should get out now,” said Satou, and I pulled out the chord that kept in the water. We toweled ourselves and messed around with the hair dryer until we were (partially) dry and lay in bed.
“I’m going to miss you,” said Satou, running his hands through my damp, light brown hair. “Wait, are you going to leave?” I asked, curling up closer to him. “Yes, Ame. I’m sorry, but I’ll have to leave early tomorrow morning,” He said, pulling me to him. “How early?” I asked. “I have to leave around six tomorrow,” he answered, “But the good news is that you don’t have to see me off, since I’ll be coming back soon,” he said with a smile. This comforted me only a little, but I decided not to be selfish or impatient. “I’ll be looking forward to it,” I said. Soon, drowsiness and the even rise and fall of Satou’s chest lulled me to sleep.
