because screw the rules i have money :iconsetokaibaplz:

OK so I was having a complain to someone about how some people portray my OTP. They act as if all Korea and Philippines' relationship is is about K-dramas and how they both like watching them. If you think that's all their relationship is built upon, let me slap you. //slaps

So another thing: some months ago I was asked on tumblr about my thoughts on KorPiri. And to be a spamming asshole, I'm going to copy what I said in my answer, gifs and all. I AM NOT SORRY. Btw I don't give a flying fuck if people disagree with any of my points. I still stand by them.

This post isn't meant to be any argument against anything, btw. Ship what you wanna ship. I just want to make a point about these two as a pairing. 8U

Anonymous asked: Thoughts on KorPiri?

My answer:
Ummm let's see

CLEARLY

except Philippines isn't canon and even if he/she was, Korea won't ever be in the anime anyway so if they got interaction, it would all be mangafied and the anime only watchers would never see that their love is legendary /bricked

soooo

I guess this gif is more fitting?

Anywho, I really, really do like this pair. I actually used to be very against OC/Canon pairs after I made a shipping sue back in Naruto fandom named Michiko Kimura and she was a random addition to Team Seven, I did a rewrite of the Naruto series to include her and she got to be on the Rescue Sasuke mission and her boyfriends were Shikamaru and Kiba and she was the best kunoichi genin everrrr and ugh, do you get the point? I realised how bad she was and kind of swore to myself never to make a sue again or to ever make a character to be shipped with the canon. Mind you, I made Michiko back when I was 13 and more weeby, sigh.

So uh… years later, Mel shifted to the APH fandom and in around late 2010-2011, she began making OCs. One day she decided to make a Philippines OC and she saw the reputation Philippines OCs had so at first, Mel was very reluctant to ship her… which was good because then she could build up Maricela as her own individual and she could happily research in peace without trying to romanticise anything or whatever, wahey, hooray.

But then came a twist in the story! Mel was also heavily into MSN roleplay groups and she was part of one on dA based off Pirates of the Caribbean! She decided to debut her Philippines there (who was still in early development stages but woo, very good) and what ended up happening is that Maricela got on very well with the Korean there, oh my. They hit it off very well and Mel was like "omg what be this" and Mel is really easy to convert to ships so she was like "JLFSKDJFLSKFDJ" - but at first she was a tad conflicted. After all, OC/Canon is fine and dandy for MSN RP she decided, but she wasn't totally sure about whether she'd ship it outside of RP.

So she did some deeper looking into KorPiri relations. She found that Korea is one of Philippines' largest trading partners. She also found that they'd fought on the same side in the Korean War and then the Vietnam War and so on. Heck, Philippines was one of the first Southeast Asians to help South Korea out in the war and it seems like that was pretty significant to the Koreans. They built a close friendship from then on. Koreans are also the no. 1 country for tourist visitors to the Philippines and hell, there's even a tourist campaign titled 'True Lovers', which was about making Korea falling in love with Philippines as a tourist destination and well, said in the print, to elevate Korea and Philippines to a status of True Lovers. Sorry, not ignoring that campaign, not ignoring it. C| Also it's not just that the Koreans love visiting the Philippines, but the Korean culture is something that many many Filipinos like. They love Korean dramas, as well as their fashion, food and their music too! And also these two have done friendship celebrations. Furthermore, neither country have gotten into huge disputes with one another.

So Mel realised that 'holy shit' they could work well outside of RP. There's basis to this pairing and omfg, they have good relations, consistently good throughout. Even without the headcanons of how the characters themselves interact, it is clear they have historical and cultural basis and there is more positive than there is negative.

I could dive into my headcanons of how Yong Soo and Maricela could work together, but that would take a while, lmao. I won't do that. Instead, I'll just say my other thoughts.

Yes, I do wish this was a more popular pairing. I think KorPiri has just as much basis as any of the other popular pairings and imo, it has more positivity to it than any of the other popular PH pairings. I also like the fact that Korea was never a coloniser of the Philippines. I can't help but feel with the coloniser/colony pairings that there's an imbalance between the two… and with pairings, I like it when the characters are on a more even scale. I feel Korea and Philippines are more even scale and I think the lack of a 'colonisation' is part of it. But it's also the fact they have contributed to one another and supported each other.

To be honest, the only argument I've seen against KorPiri is 'I think they'd just be friends'. I think it's a bit sad really, but of course, that's because I think they'd be great as more than that. I think they could easily be the type of dorky couple who can be fluffy and sweet but they're also fine to be friends with each other and I think it's important in relationships that you can treat your partner as a close friend as well as a partner… besides, the 'True Lovers' campaign isn't very good friendzoning, lmao. It's not very friendzoning at all, juuuuuust saying~ ;DDD

Also um, taken from an anthropological perspective, it's less likely that you're going to fall in love with someone you grew up with. It's because you grow up practically friendzoning or familyzoning them and honestly, that sort of thing can really stick. Sure, that's not to say all childhood based romances can't work out, but the likelihood is overall very low and many struggle with intimacy. So I can't help but feel like Brunei, Mexico, Spain and America have all been bro-zoned, wahaha. I feel like Philippines finished most of her growing up when she got her independence and I feel like that bro-zoning would have stuck. So um, along comes Korea. Korea and Philippines would have probably met pre-colonisation, but they didn't really hang out enough to have had that automatic brozone, I believe. So really, when they met again, both nations would have pretty much grown up and slipped out of that 'let's friendzone everyone, woooo'… I personally believe they have more of a basis to be looking at each other with that 'more than just friends' potential, ahaha.

Of course, if people want to headcanon them as just friends, by all means. I mean, I believe other pairings are better off as just friends and people could argue otherwise. Though what amuses me greatly is the fact that this is the best argument I have seen people come up with against KorPiri. That they headcanon them as just friends.

Compared  to other Philippines pairings, that is damn significant. And it means Mel can blast off into the sun happily, woooooooooooooooo. >3<

YES I USED ALL THOSE GIFS IN MY TUMBLR ANSWER TOO. The original post is here: sassymelons.tumblr.com/post/32…

AND NOW BECAUSE I AM OVERLY OTP ENTHUSIASTIC, HERE'S SOME HEADCANONS BECAUSE SOMEBODY WANTED TO KNOW A COUPLE OF MY HEADCANONS

------

:bulletblue: Korea and Philippines are pretty similar at their inner cores. They're both optimistic, upbeat types who prefer to look to the future rather than dwell on their past hardships. But both of them can recognise signs of when the other is dwelling, because they go about it in similar ways. They can recognise it when the other is forcing that smile rather than genuinely smiling, and they always work hard to cheer the other up!
:bulletred: To others, they may seem a bit like the idiot pair but they're really not like that all the time. In fact, they're comfortable around each other enough to be serious with each other, not just fooling around. When around other people, they'll always put on a cheerful front, even if they know the other isn't really feeling it.
:bulletblue: Sometimes it relieves Philippines a lot that Korea wasn't around for most of her history. She feels a certain relief that Korea never saw her at her worst. Also, because he wasn't around during the time she was colonised, he's a lot easier to be around - he doesn't remind her of her dark history.
:bulletred: But Korea on the other hand, he actually wants to learn more and understand the sorts of hardships Philippines went through. After all, Philippines was around during one of the lowest points in his life (the Korean War) and she worked hard to be a good friend to him and to support him. Korea didn't just want to return the sentiments, but he also thought it would strengthen their relationship if he knew more about her. Philippines has mixed feelings on this, though she feels she can trust Korea to still want to be close friends with her, even if he learns more about the hardships she's been through.
:bulletblue: The 'True Lovers' tourist campaign came after a discussion between Korea and Philippines where Korea was explaining tourism to Philippines. He said that in order for his people to want to come over to Philippines more, they have to really fall for the country. He also referenced about how people adored places like Paris so much because it was the city of love. Philippines took to his ideas and came up with the idea of True Lover being the campaign theme, inspired by Korea's ramblings… Korea loved the campaign idea, but its left him rather puzzled about Philippines' feelings towards him ever since. Philippines herself isn't 100% sure either.
:bulletred: Oh yes, the other supporters of the 'True Lovers' campaign were Indonesia and Taiwan. They're the biggest KorPiri shippers in Asia. /bricked
:bulletblue: The other ones who took to the campaign were France, Spain and Italy. France approves of the romance theme, while Spain and Italy both thought it was 'cute'. By the time Korea and Philippines became close, Spain had gotten over the mega cockblock stage so… /bricked
:bulletred: One time for karaoke, Korea and Philippines performed the version of Gangnam Style featuring Hyuna. (( www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcLNte… )) C| And they were damn snazzy about it. Both are great when it comes to musical performances and have a way of just randomly bursting into song together.
:bulletblue: They're definitely the sort of couple who can probably finish each other's sentences at times. 8I
:bulletred: Philippines always beats Korea when it comes to eating and drinking contests. Korea always beats her in sports things however… except when it's boxing. He's actually a pretty damn good match for her in basketball - his height helps a lot… Philippines is certain that if she had more height that she could beat Korea more easily.
:bulletblue: Korea loves the ideas behind Filipino courtship. He's a sucker for good romance and he loves making it dramatic too. Indonesia and Taiwan worry that he'll pick the wrong song if he tries to serenade Philippines though, orz
:bulletred: Korea and Philippines can spend an entire /week/ watching K-dramas. They're emotional wrecks by the end of the week, but both of them still firmly believe it's worth it.
:bulletblue: Philippines isn't the most fashionable, but the Koreans in her country are sort of becoming her ideas of fashion icons. Korea's also totally okay with helping Philippines shop for fashionable clothes. He also can convince her pretty easily into choosing clothes that he wants to see her in, even if she's not totally crazy about the outfit. Overall though, he does actually suggest good choices. And he's pretty damn boss at selecting accessories for her.
:bulletred: But he's only been buying her accessories as gifts more recently. His first birthday gifts to her were more impersonal - random Korean souvenirs, video games, those sorts of things. But nowadays, he isn't quite sure why, but he likes seeing Philippines wear things he got for her.
:bulletblue: Philippines prefers to make gifts herself, so many of her gifts for Korea have always been handmade things. He's kept every single gift too, though sometimes he loses them somewhere in his house. His house isn't always spotless after all, orz

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH now seriously stop it with making KorPiri seem so shallow and only K-Drama based BECAUSE IT IS NOT SHALLOW AND THEY HAVE PLENTY OF GREAT BASIS DEAL WITH IT
