Description

Graphite pencil drawing, size A4, on smooth surface heavyweight cartridge paper.

This is my attempt to draw this powerful iconic picture by Steve McCurry [link], to whom I give my thanks for his kind permission to post this drawing on DeviantART (permission document attached). A copy of the photo I used as reference can be found here href="www.deviantart.com/users/outgo…">[link].

Sharbat Gula was an Afghan refugee living in Pakistan, aged about 12 years at the time of the photograph. The photograph became famous worlwide when it was featured on the cover of the National Geographic Magazine in 1985.

A wonderful drawing, I remember this so well. I thought she was one of the most beautiful young women I had ever seen a photo of.  I just recently saw the   photo of her that was done as a mature woman holding  the famous photo.

marciokenobi.wordpress.com/tag… According to this article she had never seen the original photo when she was young.
