Skybound

It was a hot day and I was about fed up with it, ready to leave. The auction had been fun enough at first, but I didn't come to just be a lookie-loo. I was here today seeking something special. The auction so far had just been a lot of hot air from the auctioneers, flashy coats on the horses, and awed murmurs from the crowd. I can see past the colorful fur, brushed to gleaming. Stallions and mares pranced by, but none had that something that could made my heart race.

I turned around in my bleacher seat to search out my vehicle. It was way in the back, but hadn't been blocked in yet. I could make it out of the parking lot easy and maybe have time to get a ride in at home with Roman before the sun set. Returning with an empty trailer would be disappointing, but there would be other auctions. Then the crowd 'ooh'ed behind me.

I looked back to the auction pen. A mare had just been brought out, and I could immediately see why she grabbed everyone's attention. A reverse blaze was a stunning prize to add to someone's show barn. Pretty, but...finally my interest was sparked for the first time that day.

The other horses had trotted about the ring with their tails flagged, showing off. This mare walked gracefully, but heavy...as if she carried a great burden. She moved to the center of the ring, and just looked up. The horses had all been waiting in the barn, and she seemed to be glad to see the sky again. Looking closer, I could see her sides a bit darkened with sweat and her pink nostrils flared as if she had been panting. She wasn't just happy to be outside; she was relieved.

I stood to get a better look at her when she saw the movement and turned to look at me. I stood paralyzed by her gaze - though her composure was meek, her eyes were the color of the hottest blue flame. In that instant I knew she was what I came here for. My mind wandered to a special potion I had been saving back at my barn. We could make each other's dreams come true.

As the auctioneer opened his mouth to start the bidding, my hand shot up.

It was obvious, she was more than just a horse. The weight she carried came from longing. Knowing there was something greater in the air than can be found on the ground. I can tell she thinks of clouds close above her and the ground far below. She wants to feel the fire I saw in her eyes burning bright in her heart. She imagines being part of a herd in the sky. She imagines flying.

She imagines dragons.

And I will help her find them.

My bid for the Winter Import 606. I adore this girl. This piece was definitely a labor of love, but I don't regret a second of it. I had another idea that didn't really pan out, but perhaps I will try it another time. And I'm sorry, I know the story is super hokey. I'm not much of a writer, but I had to try. For her. So I hope she can find a happy home with me, but I know whoever wins her will deserve it.
