Description

In the darkness of space, a large Asteroid seems to hover so close to our planet as it comes between the orbit of the Earth and moon. A lone unmanned space craft positions itself near the asteroid, acting like a magnet using it's gravity to divert the large object’s course from slamming into the planet. At the Daily Planet, all the reporters seemed glued to the televised mission as the ship has been at work the last three and a half hours trying to divert the humungous rock. Jimmy Olsen and Lois watch the monitor as Clark stands behind them as well.

“I don't understand, why couldn't Superman just divert that thing? He'd do it much quicker and cheaper than some $250 million rocket.” asks Jimmy Olsen.

“Because Jimmy, they detected trace amounts of Kryptonite on that asteroid for one. I doubt Superman would want to chance that out in space. Also the Atlas has some robotic equipment they want to explore it. They believe that this is a piece of an alien world.” replies Lois.

Clark, who seemed of extra interest in this story, said, “I'm sure Superman would love to go up there and check it out himself. Fred Danvers along with NASA built and designed the Atlas Graviton, and I think he has faith they can get the job done.”

Lois looked to Clark with a cynic expression. “I'm still wondering how you beat me to that story, Clark.” she says as Clark diverts her attention back to the screen.

“They are launching the surveyor probe. Maybe we can determine what’s on the surface.” says Clark replies, changing the subject.

It’s called a “gravity tractor”. And it’s one of the options being seriously considered for diverting real rocks that might hit us.
