New Concepts & Proposals (April 14th Update)

 Proposal I: Simplified Categorization

  • Digital
    • Drawings & Paintings
    • Manga Pages & Strips
  • Mixed Media (Tradigital)
    • Drawings & Paintings
    • Manga Pages & Strips

  • Traditional
    • Drawings & Paintings
    • Manga Pages & Strips
This was suggested by many deviants, a simplified version of our current category tree. Most subcategories have been removed to guarantee a clear and concise submission process where miscats are less bound to happen due to the reduced amount of categories and thus less chance of confusion. Mixed Media category as home for artworks created using BOTH digital and traditional tools have been included alongside Traditional and Digital. The subcategories only reflect Images drawn in manga style (Drawings & Paintings) and Manga as comics, all of them in independent but single subcategories.

Proposal II: Illustrations vs. Manga (comics)

  •   Illustrations (Name suggestions?)

    • Digital
      • Would they really need drawings & paintings or any other subcats added?

    • Traditional

    • Mixed Media (Digital + Traditional)

  • Sequential Artwork (or Manga (comics) as it currently is named)

    • Complete Chapters, Pages & Strips
      • Digital

      • Traditional

      • Mixed Media (Digital + Traditional)

I've come up with this alternate proposal for the Gallery MakeOver. It separates submissions based on whether they are single illustrations drawn in Manga Style or Manga chapters telling a story with continuity in multiple pages. Standalone images are submitted to the first category and you can choose between Digital, Mixed or Traditional media depending on the tools you've used to create it. Do you think it needs any other subcategories like drawings & paintings or are they not necessary?
When it comes to submitting Manga chapters, pages or strips, they go into Sequential Art subcategory. If your Manga is complete and you're submitting the whole pack in a single file (be it in flash format, zip format...etc) it belongs in COMPLETE CHAPTERS (we'd have to ask for flash files to be accepted into our gallery). If you're submitting each page individually or you're just submitting a comic strip it belongs in Pages, Panels & Strips. Edit: Chapters, pages and strips no longer are in separate subcategories, but in a single one merging them all. Under each of those root categories, you can choose whether your work is fully digital, fully traditional or a mix of both (Mixed Media).

What are your thoughts...? Feedback Time!

Gallery Revamp! (March 10th update)

Hello everyone!

The Manga Chapters & Pages Themed DD week has come to an end! But it marks the beginning of a bigger event in the M&A community: a revamp in the galleries! [Read more about it here moonbeam13.deviantart.com/jour… ]

But before that, we need to ask ourselves these questions:

"What needs to be changed? What do we need? What do we don't? What can be added or removed in order to make the gallery more user-friendly and intuitive?"

The gallery currently has the following categories:
  • Digital Media

    • 3D
    • Drawings
    • Manga (comic)

      • Pages & Panles
      • Strips
    • Oekaki
    • Vector
  • Traditional Media

    • Drawings
    • Manga (comic)

      • Pages & Panels
      • Strips
    • Mixed Media
    • Paintings

What are your thoughts about it?  sTiViA and I have been discussing the topic and we agree that there ought to be some changes applied to our current category tree.

For instance:

  • In my opinion the category that we don't have but we desperately need is a MIXED MEDIA category that contains all those works made in both digital and traditional mediums. Especially in sequential art (manga) people draw their mangas using traditional ink and pens and then they scan their work and apply screentones digitally through the use of digital programs like Photoshop or MangaStudio. So why do they have to be forced to choose whether to classify their works as digital OR traditional when their work clearly showcases both?

  • Are 3D, oekaki and vector really needed? As of now, they just serve the purpose of being a source of miscats and traces. Our proposal would be to either get rid of them altogether or merge them all in one subcategory called "Other".
  • Drawings & Paintings are being merged in many other galleries, how would you feel if they were merged in Manga & Anime too? Would it make a difference? What do you think?
  • sTiViA heavily emphasized the need for a flash subcategory considering that we have many manga chapters and other imagery based in flash animations.
  • Do you think we could expand the Manga subcategory to include specific genres such as Shojo/Shonen/Other or Romantic/Action/Fantasy etc.?

Feedback time!

These are our current ideas for the gallery. What are your thoughts on them? We need your input to make sure that the modifications will be in the best interests of the community! So let us hear your dazzling ideas!! Help us out by spreading the word so that more people can find out about this and share their thoughts too! :eager:

I'd go for option two: Categories are meant to keep things together that are similar to each other, right? Comic strips and illustrations are something completely different, while "digital" and "traditional" are just different ways to achieve a similar result. If that made sense. I'm bad at explaining things xD

You've got a point concerning the subcategories you mentioned, yet I'd rather keep the "oekaki" somewhere. I really don't want to re-tag 40+ deviations as "oekaki" because there's no category for it... x_x
If you keep some subcats under Illustrations>digital*, you should probably either keep them all or just merge oekaki and vector with drawings&paintings, and keep 3D as a subcat, because it's really pretty darn different from any other category in there.
Drawings&Paintings should definitely be merged, you can't tell them apart anyway. They're just confusing.
Adding genres would probably only end in the hugest heap of awful miscats you've ever seen, and there's an ever so slight possibility that you'd be overrun by thousands of teenage girls wanting their own yaoi category xD

*you should really do that, by the way. Reducing categories is one thing, but throwing everything on a giant heap and say "hey, that's absolutely organized" is a bad idea, especially on a page like dA, where you can be pretty sure to get bitch-slapped to the moon and back for changing anything at all. It also sounds a lot like me cleaning my room and that usually doesn't end well either.
