An Introduction

Hallo and welcome to the latest Community Relations newsletter for Abstract & Surreal Photography, usually written for communityrelations - however, a lack of official newsletter activity this time around means I am publishing my own section independently. Here you'll find relevant information from the last two months of abstract and surreal activity, as well as information about my features and any particular plans for the future. As always, I shall direct your attention to my Roadmap, and my Daily Deviation Guidelines; two documents that one should keep a keen eye on. The former conveniently indexes all my previous journal entries, while the latter provides useful information regarding Daily Deviation suggestions. It also links through to an editorial I published back in December regarding controversy around Daily Deviation features.

General News

While I used to participate in the regular Photography Fortnightly articles, a recent lull in their publication means that I've taken to expanding my own monthly bulletin features, and I shall feature those here from now. Be sure to check them out for archival information regarding group and artist activity in the abstract and surreal community. These articles also feature news about my Forum Thumbshare, which is a monthly drive to encourage people to share their abstract and surreal works, and the works of others that they particularly enjoy. So far this has been a successful venture; I am glad to see so many people participating each month.

Abstract/Surreal Pinboard: April 2013Hallo everyone, and welcome to April. Despite the recent bad weather here in the UK and beyond, the clocks have changed for us and officially we're in summer time. With the longer days comes greater opportunity to capture those shots you've been planning over the winter.
This is just a short piece of correspondence to let you know about some current Community Relations-led events that might be of interest and relevance to the Abstract & Surreal community. Feel free to take part, or to inform me of other abstract and surreal happenings that I could promote.
communityrelations Stamp Project
This month sees a special contest ran by communityrelations, with the theme being stamps for Community Volunteers. The aim of the contest is simple: create as many support stamps as you like for the people who volunteer their time and efforts towards the site, and win prizes in return. The contest closes on the 30th April, and further details can be found
Abstract/Surreal Pinboard: May 2013Hallo everyone, and welcome to May. For most of us in the northern hemisphere, May means the onset of summer and either the embracing or resentment of the heat that comes with it. Personally, I spend most of the summer with a cold towel over my head, but I understand that for some it is a time of great excitement.
This is just a short piece of correspondence to let you know about some current Community Relations-led events that might be of interest and relevance to the Abstract & Surreal community. Feel free to take part, or to inform me of other abstract and surreal happenings that you know of or are involved with: I'll be sure to update this journal to include them here.

Abstract/Surreal Pinboard: June 2013Hallo everyone, and welcome to June. We're nearing the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere, meaning there is a lot of 'magic hour' light with which to capture some great atmospheric scenes. Personally I'm spending the entire time behind a desk fan, but that's just me.

Daily Deviations

As Community Volunteer for Abstract and Surreal Photography, I publish Daily Deviation features each and every day. At the end of each month I collate these into reports, and since the last update there have been two of those. Additionally, I have a category in my favourites which exhibits, together, all the pieces that I have featured. As always, I am open to Daily Deviation suggestions, but please follow the guidelines I have set out and don't be discouraged if I don't reply to your note; being a CV is like spinning plates, and some forms of correspondence need to take priority over others.

Daily Deviation Report: April 2013Hallo, and welcome to my April Daily Deviation Report. What follows is a comprehensive feature of the Daily Deviations that I featured during the month of April 2013 in the Abstract and Surreal categories. This month, as with the last, has been a difficult one for me in terms of my staff responsibilities, due to one computer breaking and another having continued teething troubles. I apologise for not being as active since February in terms of comments and correspondence, but hopefully this will change in the coming days and weeks.
In terms of this collection, all of these images caught my eye in some way; whether it be through technical perfection, compositional intrigue, or the concept within. I am proud to present these works, and I applaud the relevant artists for their dedication and inspiration.

Friday Feature

Since the last newsletter, a large number of Friday Features have been released. These journals feature work both within and outwith the abstract and surreal community, and cover media outside of photography. Affiliated with this series is my Forum Thumbshare series, and at the end of each month a special feature is published which contains the best work submitted in each month's edition. There have also been a number of preview editions, which looked at the work of a particular artist or style.

I no longer know if I am mad
Or if I'm feigning it to cover my own mediocrity
I sometimes feel like a fell wizened necromancer
Labouring at his pleasure
Performing his liturgy as one long consumed by ashes
Factory fumes nourishing the dreams of the cosmopolite
Affectionate longing for white coats, auditoriums and blackboard dust
Spiralling walkways, webs of concrete, bricks and mirrored glass
I no longer know if I have experienced passion/love/despair/hate
Was it only socially induced behaviour?
Like long forgotten twisted poetry
Gleaned from mouldy parchment
Pain is always more real than bliss
It's in greater supply
It's the warm familiar womb in which your mind can hide

Saturday Spotlight

My Saturday Spotlight series has become, perhaps, my most popular and well-received action since starting my tenure as Abstract and Surreal Community Volunteer. Each week, I interview a prominent member of the abstract and surreal community, and invite each artist to share their thoughts and opinions on the genre and their work. While it is the most time-consuming aspect of my role, it is definitely the most rewarding and I am glad that it's being enjoyed by the rest of the community: it was originally planned only to be a monthly feature running for one year, but recently I published my 20th edition and there's no end in sight just yet!

I'm a 37 year old New Zealander, born and raised in apartheid South Africa; not something I am particularly proud of. I work part-time as a real estate photographer, which I mostly enjoy, even though it is a purely technical exercise. In my spare time, I like to get creative behind the camera, just wandering around wherever I might be and opening my eyes to opportunities that present themselves. Apart from that, I like to be adventurous and enjoy hiking, camping and going on epic road trips!

Hi, I'm Jess! I'm twenty-three and I'm on deviantART mostly for fractal art. I also like to write and I am fascinated by linguistics: I read too many fantasy novels and web-comics. If you ever want to talk to me there's a good chance I'm lurking in Aposhack.

Hi. My name is Steve Jones, and I live on a small island off the south coast of England. I love sport, music, and sunshine. I also like the feeling you get when life throws you a sense of realisation and creative emotion. I enjoy living by the sea.
> Where did you begin with artistic endeavours? How did you come across Abstraction or Surrealism?
I stumbled upon collage art a few years ago, having previously had no practical art experience, other than the occasional bout of creative writing through pro

> Please introduce yourself, in your own words. What are your interests?
My name is Teresa Clark, and I was born in 1974 in Mexico City. I am a painter but I'm also interested in many things which usually interact, like cinema, nature, music, psychology, literature, etcetera. Since life is short, I've devoted myself to one activity, painting, that fulfils my needs and desires; yet I've done my best to allow other interests to feed it. Knowledge and feeling may come from the unexpected and one must be open to everything, if possible.

> Where did you begin with artistic endeavours? How did you come across Abstraction or Surrealism?
This is a complicated question for me as art comes as naturally to me as breathing. I didn't wake up one morning and say "Today, I'm going to see the world as an artist sees the world." I wish it would have been that simple. To more closely

I was born on January 30th, 1978 and I currently live and work as an IT analyst in Athens, Greece. Most of my free time is dedicated to photography, either by watching the work of famous or less established photographers, or by trying to embody my influences in the pictures that I create myself.

My name is Jakub: I was born in Krosno, in Poland, 27 years ago. I live in Wrocanka - a quiet little place near Krosno. I have always been someone who likes to learn - at school I was fascinated with the world of science, but later my interest turned to humanities. I studied English linguistics and Polish philology - that is why I would say that I'm still interested in how the world functions, but now I am more curious of how we perceive it: what use we make from our memory, knowledge and emotions.

Sunday Soundcheck

Planned to be something to end the week in a light-hearted manner, this series has proven to be surprisingly popular, and with the music I am featuring there is certainly a connection to the abstract and surreal genre; I tend to enjoy artists whose sound is either deconstructed or rebuilt beyond recognition. Nonetheless, this is a slightly off-topic look back at the journals that have been published since the last update. Maybe you'll find something you'll enjoy. Who knows?

YOURCODENAMEIS:MILO

They Came From The Sun - 2007

Ignoto - 2005
Origin Point:
United Kingdom
Sounds Like:
Indie Rock, Alternative, Math Rock, Post Hardcore
A change of direction this week with the featuring of a sadly short-lived local band, hailing from the former pit-towns of north-east England. YOURCODENAMEIS:MILO was an energetic rock collective whose infectious, melody-laden sound on their début release should've seen them garner wider attention at a time when inferior acts with a similar sound were making waves in the UK indie music scene. Alas, it wasn't to be, and we are left with just two full releases. Both are inconsistent, but both are memorable and both sounded singularly fantastic as a live performance.

Whale Fall

Whale Fall - 2011
Origin Point:
United States
Sounds Like:
Post Rock, Ambient, Experimental
Post-rock is a genre of music which has expanded exponentially since the early 2000s, and there is a lot of dross to be found between the buried gems. This sole release by the NY-based Whale Fall is definitely a diamond in the rough, following enough of the post-rock signatures to appease any fans of the scene while also being interesting enough to have a wider appeal. A prime example of this is the track Kodiak, a striking number whose early solid-if-unremarkable early notes give way to an inspirational brass-led crescendo. This is a pattern that repeats throughout the album; solid musicianship with moments of genius, a fine accomplishment for a début effort.

The Murder Of Tom Fitzgerril - 2006

Nostalgia For The Future - 2004
Origin Point:
United States
Sounds Like:
Space Rock, Shoegaze, Alternative, Post Rock, Progressive
Constants push the boundaries of musical genres with this selection of works, blending a noise that's situated between the lush guitar soundscapes and distant vocal renditions of shoegaze, and the crushing walls of noise associated with space rock. While they have released two albums beyond this selection in recent years, neither are close to matching this trio in terms of ambi

Kokomo - 2013

If Wolves - 2011

Matterhorn Bob & The Black Fair - 2009
Origin Point:
Germany
Sounds Like:
Post Metal, Instrumental, Sludge, Progressive, Post Rock, Cinematic
Kokomo is a relatively recent addition to the post-metal landscape, hailing from the industrial west of Germany. Their lush, dense sound is interwoven with cinematic sampling, particularly evident in their first release. Their second offering, If Wolves, is a veritable tour-de-force of the genre - as well as having some outstanding cover art. I mean, who doesn't like bears and geometry? On this and beyond, their sound is much more refined and it benefi

A Pyramid For The Living - 2006

Darkness & Distance - 2003

Speak It Not Aloud - 2001
Origin Point:
United States
Sounds Like:
Post Rock, Instrumental, Math Rock, Progressive, Ambient
This week features an obscure Chicago-based act whose sound got a whole lot more difficult to find with the emergence of a pop-icon namesake in recent years. Del Rey play out a great post-rock sound, with their latest release Immemorial being highly recommended. Their earlier material
Sunday Soundcheck: Set 028This week...
Battle Of Mice

A Day Of Nights - 2006
Origin Point:
United States
Sounds Like:
Post Metal, Sludge, Progressive, Experimental, Post Rock, Avantgarde
Composed of a motley assortment of musicians whose main acts range from Neurosis to Fugees, the short-lived Battle Of Mice is in many ways a musical oddity. Sounding rather like having one's head pushed into a blender by angry cats, their frenetic post-metal sound is emphasised by the truly schizoid vocal performance of Julie Christmas: from vaguely twisted sing-song melodies to screaming curses through whispered incantations and haunting choral passages, she steals the show and ensures that their only full release, A Day Of Nights, is never close to being easy-listening. This is most evident towards the end of the playing order, with a harrowing 911 call halfway through At Th

Glorie

Falling - 2013

Glorie - 2011
Origin Point:
United States
Sounds Like:
Post Rock, Instrumental, Ambient, Cinematic, Neoclassical
Memphis, Tennessee isn't exactly a hotbed of post-rock talent, but Glorie bucks the trend in quite spectacular fashion. Their predominantly string and key-led sound has an impressive sense of urgency which is reflected in the comparatively short running times of their tracks, particularly evident in their latest release. A consistently impressive collective, well-worth checking out - for those who absolutely require a starting point, try Run Away from Falling.

Trifonic

Ninth Wave - 2012

Emergence - 2008
Origin Point:
United States
Sounds Like:
IDM, Electronica, Downtempo, Post Rock, Dubstep, Experimental
The brothers Trifon come from two radically different backgrounds; one is a classically trained metal guitarist while the other produces DJ beats, but together they have a sound that is something special. Usually, when an artist attempts to bridge the gap between electronic and acoustic instruments the results are trite at best, but here there's a sound that's somewhere between post-rock and IDM - passing through many different aesthetics on the way. Their stand-out track for me is Parks On Fire from Emergence, a behemoth of dub and glitch and Four Tet-inspired key sounds, all

Parliament of Owls

Crow - 2009
Origin Point:
United Kingdom
Sounds Like:
Acoustic, Folk, Ambient, Experimental
Another recommendation from the excellent Shelsmusic label, this time the obscure and mysterious Parliament of Owls. Little is known about this act, other than that they are based in London and produce sorrowful, acoustic-led melodies with haunting vocals and ambient passages. This 2009 release is their only mark on the musical world; a hushed and exhausted dirge that's best listened through headphones in the early hours of the morning.
I'll be featuring significantly more-recognisable bands in future, but for now, enjoy the latest offering of hidden treasure.
