Hallo everyone, and welcome to July. Excuse me whilst I melt into my office chair. Anyone living in a sub-arctic climate feel like offering me a job or residence?

This is just a short piece of correspondence to let you know about some current Community Relations-led events that might be of interest and relevance to the Abstract & Surreal community. Feel free to take part, or to inform me of other abstract and surreal happenings that you know of or are involved with: I'll be sure to update this journal to include them here.

Monthly Photography Critique Thread

Watched over by Kaz-D and 3wyl, this is a monthly initiative to get people to comment and particularly critique on the works of others. It also offers artists the chance to submit one piece of their own work for critique by their peers. This is a worthwhile cause, and I feel it may be useful to members of the abstract and surreal community whose work struggles to garner feedback. The July edition is now live and you can take part here.

Monthly Abstract & Surreal Thumbshare

This is a recurring feature of mine that invites all abstract and surreal artists to take part and share a selection of their own abstract and surreal work. It doesn't matter about the medium; I feel that the genre is more important than the processes involved in creating an image. If you don't have any relevant work of your own, or simply if you'd prefer, you're also welcome to share the work of others that you particularly enjoy. The regular edition of the thread can be found here, and the premium edition for subscribers can be found here. At the end of the month, the nine images that I enjoy most will be published in a special Feature Friday article.

Monthly Photography Chat Events

With the launch of CRPhotography, some changes have been made to the monthly photography chat events. From now, they will be held in #CRPhotography rather than #CommunityRelations, and there are plans to make this a fortnightly event, with one being scheduled to suit European photographers and another planned to suit artists from the Americas. There are currently no chat events scheduled, but any updates will be published here.

Monthly Feature & News Roundup

With Photography Fortnightly only occurring intermittently of late, I've taken the decision to use this pinboard journal to host the content I would usually promote there. As such, here will be the main source of updates and features from the major abstract and surreal groups. Please do check out the links and features which follow this introduction, as there is much to be found of great interest and intrigue throughout their content. Additionally, I have included news updates from relevant sources, and personal journals worth another look.

Randomized News 4.7Dear friends, dear members and dear watchers :iconconstructionsignplz:
I expect you know this feeling :icongrumpyworkerplz: no energy, no inspiration, no time and the heavy feeling of needing a rest.
So we decided to close the group while our holidays for the whole July. :relax:
But now we want to continue our randomized series 4.X in this journal. Today we present you a selection from our folder called non-real by wrong place.
Our intention is, to give you an idea how "wrong place" can be interpreted.
As a gift and surprise I didn't add a collection from our wonderful affiliate Infrared-Club - no today I want to thank it's founder which is also my dearest David Okavanga, who is such a wonderful co-founder and friend to me.
Also take a view to the bottom of this journal - there are contest news from one of our lovely affiliates.
But now, please enjoy the wrong places of non-real.
Today I will not add catego

The Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is a unique park in Kassel, Germany. Art historian Georg Dehio (1850–1932),
inspirator of the modern discipline of historic preservation, described the park as "possibly the most grandiose
combination of landscape and architecture that the Baroque dared anywhere”.
The area of the park is 2.4 square kilometres (590 acres), making it the largest European hillside park,
and second largest park on a mountain slope in the world. Construction of the Bergpark, or "mountain park",
began in 1696 and took about 150 years.
On 23 June 2013 the Mountainpark and the Hercules were proclaimed as world heritage sites
during the UNESCO meeting in Pnom Penh.

Die Ghul Show with DAVESPERTINE!:icondasghul:: Welcome to my humble show, :icondavespertine:!
Do you enjoy being here? :)
:icondavespertine:: Well, if you mean do i enjoy being on dA then not as much as i used to...
but if you mean do i enjoy being on the Ghoul Show, YES it is the best thing that has happened to me on dA in a long time :)
:icondasghul:: I meant the later option, thank you darling! :slap:
But since you seem to have quite some issues with dA lately, http://davespertine.deviantart.com/journal/poll/3653602/    http://davespertine.deviantart.com/journal/poll/3701174/    http://davespertine.deviantart.com/journal/poll/3691546/    http://davespertine.deviantart.com/journal/poll/3665565/ I can still understand why you are confused here! :pat:
So why not use the GHOUL SHOW, actually being an important part of dA as a whole, to tell our noble audience what's so dead WRONG with dA lately? :)
:icondavespertine:: it is largely my own state of mind, you get out what you

AbstractOk, friends, let me start this entry by revealing the painful truth: the concept of Abstract photography is a contradiction in terms, or I could even go so far to say that there is no such thing as “Abstract photography”.
As I see it there is a big difference between “abstraction” and the term “abstract” where the first is a generic term for what basically all imagery is about, and the second; a term that is connected to modernism, like Constructivism, Concretism, or Abstract Expressionism.

I sometimes get the feeling that this word “abstract” is being used very lightly and actually wrong when it comes to photography. It’s like it is used to describe an aesthetic posture more than actually describing a concept that has its base in modernism. But more on that later, first is first, so let’s start from the beginning:
All two dimensional based imagery, whether it is paintings, draw
ConceptualIf you take a photograph of a building, perfectly executed regarding exposure, tonality and things like that, and you shoot it so the structure of this building, how it is built clearly shows in the depiction, then one could say that you have shot an architectural photo. If you take a photograph of the same building, but this time with someone standing in one of the windows and with some kids playing in the yard in front of it, well then you could say you shot a street-photo (at least if it is in black and white, and you don’t know any of the people in your photo). Now, if you shoot the same photo but this time in color, bright and beautiful colors, and with happy smiling faces on the children playing in the yard, and on the person standing in the window, then it might be a photo for the owner of this building to use in their advertisement. If you take a photograph of the building once again but focusing in on your mother and father standing on one of the balconies waving at you, The Street and IAbout a week ago I got an invitation to join a street-project at Art Limited, and I thought to myself; “well this was kind of strange, interesting, but strange. Why on earth do I get an invitation to a project dedicated to street-photography?”

First of all; as a statement for the project they have this quotation by Henri-Cartier Bresson: “To take a photograph means to recognize – simultaneously and within a fraction of a second– both the fact itself and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that give it meaning. It is putting one’s head, one’s eye, and one’s heart on the same axis.
An interesting quotation that I fully agree with, but the sad thing is that I have never been particularly fond of Bresson’s photography. I know that he is something of a Godfather to street-photographers and I know that one should at least try to like his artistic achievements, and I have tried, but that works in the

That's all for now; thank-you for your time.

Hmmm, I'm sorry here it's also very warm - so a chair would be here for you but not an arctic climate.

Thanks a lot for your support. I really appreciate it. [Usually I would add a sun but today I think this is more appropriate :icongloomyrainplz: ;-)]
