This is a journal explaining what adoptables are and the terms adopt makers use, I hope this helps.
Adoptables are basically, selling character designs for personal use. You are basically getting the rights to the character/character design for your own use.
Why can't I just take the design with the same colours and style?
Because that is theft! Everything someone makes in copyrighted which makes it illegal. People put a LOT of effort in some adoptables and you should respect that, we are not cavemen stealing things from each other, we are people who work on trades.
Adoptables are normally bought with a currency.
There is:
- DeviantArt Points (
the deviantart currency, points can be given, spent and bought www.deviantart.com/account/poi… )
- USD (American Dollars) or any other currency, GBP, AUD etc.
- Art (to trade for art they to create for you)
- Designs (Trading an already made design for the adoptable)
- Art Slavery (Don't know how this works, but I don't think this is deems trustworthy, seeing how it's a flimsy inconsistent term)
Different terms and conditions for every host that posts adoptables. Always remember to read the rules because somethings mean different things to people
The adoptable/s are open and can be adopted
Closed
The adoptable/s are closed, already have an character/s and cannot be adopted
Hold
The adoptable is awaiting payment from someone else who would like to buy it
Auction
The adoptable is up for auction, so you would have to bid and the highest bidder after a certain time wins the adoptable for the price they offered
Offer to Adopt/O2A/OTA
You can offer things(Real money/Points/Art/Art Slavery[depends on what the host wants)). The highest offer, or the best offer will be chosen by the host.
DTA/D2A
Meaning "Draw to Adopt". It is a contest with a deadline. To draw the character you would like to adopt and when the contest is over the host will chose the new owner, based off what they are looking for.
WTA/W2A
Basically like a DTA but you write someone to match the adoptable you would like yo adopt, it's a writing contest.
Free
It's free to adopt, no money, no points, but there may be some things you need to do, like filling out a form, or if the host just don't have rules, ask nicely for the adoptable.
CYOP/PYOP
Also, Chose/Pick your own colours/palette, for adoptable linearts where after you buy them, can chose the colour of the adoptables and the host will colour them to what you would like.

CB/Current Bid: The current highest bid offered by someone.
MI/Minimum Increase: You are only allowed bid a certain number of points/cash higher or more.
AB/Autobuy: To buy the auctioning adoptable straight away with no bidding.
TBA: Stand for "To be annouced", mainly used for an Autobuy that wouldn't be announced after a certain time.
You need to remember that you are buying a design from someone.
Rules to remember:
1. ALWAYS be polite, the owner has all the right to refuse to sell something to you.
2. There is no fighting in the comments, we are not animals.
3. There is no stealing, because if you think stealing anything is okay, you're f*cking stupid.

Or else there will be some serious consequences, such as deactivation of account or banning from pages.
