Photoshop tutorials
I'm back with writing my journal tutorials for Photoshop. I didn't post any new journal tutorial in a while ^^; Now I also edited journal skin, so it'll be more appropriate for "Photoshop tips" ;P Anyway, my previous tutorial you can check here. I'll describe some Photoshop basics for everyone who try to learn to use Photoshop. So in this article you'll find tutorials: Making selections, Customizing brush, Bevel & Emboss, Stroke. In this tutorial I used my painting Came From Hell, just to show you few things. :la:

If you wish to see images in full resolution then simply click on the images below (they are big as my screen 1920 x 1080 px... OK I cropped bar below ;P). I used Photoshop CS6 here, so some things may be different in lower PS versions. But most of things may be the same in all PS versions. I'll make even more tutorials like this, so stay tuned. And if you like it, then you can :+fav: fav this article. Thank you and enjoy. I hope it's helpful

Making selections
Basics3-1 by Valentina-Remenar
When you want to paint character without background, and if you use many layers then it can be difficult to erase errors on each layer separately (which you painted over the lines). Well, then it can be easier if you select just the base color of the character. On the picture you can see my character on transparent background. When you start to draw, then paint base of the character (inside the lineart) with one solid color. It must be painted on one separated layer (not background layer). Later you'll use that layer for making selections.

Now we'll make selections. HOLD CTRL key on your keyboard and click on LAYER THUMBNAIL which you want to select. On the picture you'll see striped lines all over painted things which you drew on that specific layer.
Basics3-2 by Valentina-Remenar
It'll select "inside color" which you have on that layer. You'll be able to paint the character and color won't go over the lines or selection. To deselect selected area simply click CTRL+D on your keyboard.
Basics3-3 by Valentina-Remenar
If you wish to select area around the character, then click on top menu Select/ Inverse option. It'll inverse your selected area and you'll be able to paint around the character (though you can paint just on layer below the character). To deselect selected area simply click CTRL+D on your keyboard.

Customizing brush
Basics5 by Valentina-Remenar
I'll describe you few things how to customize your brushes (more in next tutorial). Image above will describe how to customize Brush Tip Shape (to get this menu go to Window/Brush). There you can change it's Angle and Roundness (image 2). Like that will brush be more flat and when you'll draw it'll be under one angle more thin and under different angle more thick. You can also change Spacing (image 3). If you set spacing on 0% then brush will have smooth transitions. Bigger spacing you'll select then bigger spaces will be with each brush repetition.
Basics6 by Valentina-Remenar
Now we'll check Shape Dynamics menu (image 1). If you change Size Jitter then size of each brush repetition will variate (it won't get "smoothly" smaller with lower brush pressure). Minimum Diameter will select smaller brush size. If you have it on 0% then it'll get completely small with lowest brush pressure. If you set it on 100% then brush pressure won't affect its size (its size will be always on 100%)...image 2. (image 3) Angle Jitter will change angle of each brush repetition. If you set it on 0% then angle will be the same on all brush repetitions. If you set it on 100%, then each brush repetition will be rotated under different angle. The last setting in this menu will be Roundness Jitter (it changes roundness of each brush repetition) and Minimum Roundness. If you set it on 100% then it'll be biggest difference between repetition's roundness size (from thinnest to widest).

Bevel & Emboss
Basics9 by Valentina-Remenar
Next thing is adding Bevel & Emboss. I mostly use this effect for metallic things and accessories at my characters. On image above I showed how to apply the effect on text. Choose Type tool (T on keyboard) and write what you want. For adding effect click on FX button at the bottom right...select Bevel & Emboss option. There you can change Technique, Depth, Direction, Size and Soften. In my middle text I chosen Chisel Hard technique...this will give metal look. I also changed other settings like Size and Depth. Here you can experiment a lot, so you'll see what will happen when you change few settings. At the bottom text I changed technique to Smooth (it comes by default when you click Bevel & Emboss tool). You can see that edges look much softer. There you can also change Angle of light and color of the light (and many other settings).

Stroke
Basics10-3 by Valentina-Remenar
Next FX mode. Now I'll describe how to use Stroke Blending mode. If you want to add stroke around your text or around your painting/character... then simply click on FX button at the bottom right corner. Select Stroke option. There you can set Stroke Size, Position, Blend Mode, Opacity and Color. At the text above I changed Position from Outside to Inside (so stroke will go inside the text). If you want to have transparent text, without the color inside (outline), then simply set Layer's Fill to 0% (on layer where you added stroke effect).

That's everything for now :dummy:... I hope you learned something new and if you liked this tutorial, then you can also :+fav: fav this article. Thank you  More tutorials by us you can see under THIS folder (even my older journal tutorials you can now find under this folder) :la: If you have any questions, then feel free to comment under this article. We'll be glad to help you
