Part Two
I can't believe they stuck me with the old man, Foma thought bitterly. Of all the mentors she could have possibly had at this racing complex, it had to be an old Arabian stallion. Foma knew he was old because he was completely white, save for a strange grey marking on his face.
As she ambled through the gap in the training track fence, the stallion swung his dished head around. Foma was struck by how blue his eyes were -- bluer than hers, bluer than her father's. He was also tall -- very, very tall.
"Good morning, Fomalhaut," the Arabian said. "I am Lightning."
Lightning? Foma smirked. "Hello," she returned airily.
"We'll begin today with a few light warm-up exercises," he began.
Foma swished her tail. "Pardon, sir," she interupted. "But when shall I race?"
Lightning flicked one ear. "You'll run when we've conditioned you to keep up with me," he replied, lowering his head a fraction.
Foma almost laughed. Keep up with him? An old Arabian? He probably didn't have one drop of magical blood in him like her kind did; like her uncle Corky, or aunt Gia. Just a stupid marking on his face. He was probably arthritic, which was why they were parading him out with the newbies -- just to keep him limber in retirement.
Her thoughts must have shown in her body language, because Lightning suddenly said, "Fine. Go, run. One lap of the track. I'll give you a two-furlong headstart."
"Sir, is that wise?" Foma's exercise rider asked. "I mean ..."
"It'll be fine," the brown-haired woman on the old Arabian's back replied.
I'll run, old man, Foma thought as she turned herself towards the furlong pole. I'll run ...

Lightning is a personal character of mine, and while not affiliated with HArpg, I thought it fitting to bring him in. Gives me an excuse to draw him and write about him again.
